CARP 2015 SWAP

Recommended Posts

Edit: Mine are in the mail now. I went with a clam fly. Interesting thing to imitate, to say the least, but carp eat 'em!

I'm not sure why mine haven't arrived yet... I gave them to a relative to mail, and there's a chance they put them in later or something, because they really should have arrived by now (14 days is too long). I'll try and get to the bottom of it tomorrow, but I guess with the 15 day expansion, there shouldn't be a problem.

Let me just make sure, you haven't got them Joeseph, right?

Sorry, I've been busier than I expected lately, and have sort of pushed this off. Have about half done now. For sure I will get mine in the mail by this weekend.

I've tied a few practice ones and so far so good. I have never fished for carp. From what I have been told they are a boney fish.

You've been told incorrect information, Add. Anatomically, they are one of the least "boney" fish I've cleaned. Large bones, easily filleted out.

Their mouth is nothing but lips. It's very easy to set a hook, as long is it holds on long enough for that. The trick with carp is that they are essentially, one big taste bud and they don't hold on to something for very long, unless it tastes "real". They are also easily spooked, and splashing a big fly near them can turn them off feeding for hours.

Mike, we used to get carp out of Lake Superior that would run up from the Duluth Harbor area. Out of the big GittcheGumme they were delicious smoked. Like you said, easy to pick big slabs of meat off the big bones with no little bones to worry about like a lot of fish have. The thing with carp is that they are dictated in taste and pollutants from the water that they are from. Good water, good carp. Carp are fairly slow growing and live a long time so they have a lot of time to store PCBs and the other contaminants that we so carelessly have burdened our water supplies with for years. If it goes into the water and disappears it's obvious it won't do anyone any harm.

Alright, turns out this is what happened. The flies only recently got in the mail, so they should be there soon from now.

Thanks for setting me straight....Maybe I am getting a carp confused with what we call a buffalo (drum). Is a drum boney?

Oh yea...I hopefully will be mailing my flies tomorrow!
