Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Hey gang, I poked around in the shop threw together a tying station today. A couple of scrap 2x2's, a few ends of 1x8 left over from a shelving project, a thousand screws, too much wood glue, and some felt for the feet, and I have a nifty (I think) new toy that should keep the missus happier than if I clamped my vise to the dining room table.... I put some pictures up on my website if anybody's interested: ---> My Webpage <--- You've already seen the flies, but I added them to the page too. Cheers! Gary (gonna go tie something now....) wilcara 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Hey dude - I know a cabinet maker might shudder, as teh bench is by your own admission a bit on the "rough and ready" side, but I reckon its ok. I like the design of it. I might even have a go at one like it myself. Thanks for sharing that.
Guest Report post Posted February 7, 2005 The empty clamp on the right is to a "Sunrise" brand vise...which is a cheap vise made in India (also sold as Cabela's $10 vise). Being cheap doesn't mean it doesn't work, though, I've got one as a spare vise and my wife has one as her main vise. It is basically a clone of a Thompson Model A, albeit slightly smaller, These days my Thompson Model A stays up in my office at work, in case I get really bored during my office hours...My main vise these days is a Danvise. Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Thanks Mark, Yup: The empty clamp is from the Sunrise that I affixed to the tying bench itself. As you say, cheap in price doesn't necessarily mean a garbage vise, as it works just fine, it hold the hooks, and its jaws haven't exploded yet. I am curious about the straight vise immediately to the left of that empty clamp... Cheers! Gary

Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 A Hookah? Well, you know, some guys like to drink beer while they tie and some guys.... heh Seriously, nope: It's just a teapot (on a candle powered warmer) Cheers! Gary

Beadheads#1 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Good job. I have to tell my tying bench story now. I was looking for something inexpensive (ok I'll say it) cheap. Maybe a cheap computer table from Big Lots, or Kmart or somewhere and couldn't find anything that really caught my fancy, so going home from work one day I just happened to glance into a used furniture store and saw a roll top desk. What the heck, I'll stop and see what he wants for it.......After careful examination of the desk I saw a price tag of $150.00 (It's not solid wood, mostly laminates) The owner did not hesitate to drop to $100 without saying a word. so I did some more examination and said well, I'd give you $75, and without hesitation he said it's yours. Turns out the owners wife bought it brand new for $350 a year ago for him and he had no use for it. But made me a dang good tying desk.......
Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2005 Exactly what I'm looking for beadheads: A rolltop that I can hide everything in and will actually add to the decor while not in use. I envy your good fortune! Cheers! Gary

Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2005 Artimus: I'm in Trenton (if you've never heard of this hamlet, it's between Toronto and Kingston, on the Bay of Quinte.) Season opener? I'm planning on hooking up with the local club (Cold Creek Fly Fishers (http://www.coldcreekflyfishers.com)) and getting started that way. Thanks again all for the kind words. I'm flattered that anybody would consider taking any ideas from this thing, and if there's anything I can do to help, just holler. Steve: I'm not such which vise you mean (Herters) but the one I'm asking about has no marking on it. It's old, and has a cast iron clamp... that's about all I can tell ya. By the way, I put up 4 more pictures of flies (making a total of 8 now.) There are a few of some fanciful flies I threw together tonight just for practice and there is one of the fly my 10 year old son just tied (his first one ever!) He's hooked as well. Hooked real good http://www3.sympatico.ca/daito/tying.htm Cheers! Gary

Gary Madore 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2005 Art, I'm military too (but not a Cop, so I know nothing about your time at the MP Shack! LOL) I'm at 426 Sqn, the C-130 Operational Training Unit. I teach part-time, but my primary job is at TOTEF (Transport Operational Test and Evaluation Unit), a sub-unit of 426 Sqn where we do test flying on all aircraft belonging to the transport and rescue fleets.
