Adam Saarinen 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2015 Ofcourse! If these flies are for your own fishing? Buy half decent or the best! Just remember, no one is forsing you to be imprisioned behind the tying vise! It's much better to spend a long time behind the vise to make the perfect fly than the same amount of time to make 10 crap ones! You do the math! tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2015 IMO, quality is not necessarily reflected in price. I've been tying for a long time as have others here & we've seen the gambit of brands that have come along. I've tied on & still tie on many brands & styles, even some not marketed as "fly" hooks. IMO, all currently available hooks that I've used are good quality. They each serve their purpose. Yes, there are some that are better than others based on such features as sharpness, and bending strength, but I believe it's relative to price. That does not mean a hook such as the Eagle Claw or older Mustad hooks are lesser quality. They still can serve their purpose. Much of the "quality" issue is based on personal ideas of what quality entails. What much of this "quality" issue boils down to for most of us is what price are we willing to pay, for the hooks we use. Generally, hooks are inexpensive no matter what brand a tier decides to use, if you compare to other equipment we use. I don't believe in paying a higher price for hooks than i have to pay, but at the same time, will pay whatever price for hooks I feel fit my needs best. In that regard, for some larger hooks I've purchased, I've paid as much as $2 each for hooks. For my intended purpose with such hooks, that's still relatively inexpensive since it's not a hook I would buy in large quantities or use a lot. For the majority of fly hooks now on the market for tying "trout" flies, it's very possible that some of the "house" brands sold by various vendors are from the same source. As such, prices vary for the same product. Prices certainly vary for "name brand" products so if a person chooses to stick with specific brands, then the only way to deal with price is find the lowest you can from a reliable source. Strictly speaking "trout" types fly hooks if I had to pick brands in order of my personal preference, I would pick Daiichi, Partridge and Maruto in that order. However, I very much like the hooks Allen is selling so, they would be my number one choice based solely on price. I also happen to like Allen's saltwater style hooks. For bass flies, and hooks in the 1/0 or larger range or equivalent sizes (such as stinger hooks) I again like Allen's hooks, but my favorite is Owner, then Gamakatsu, then Mustad Ultra Point. Beyond these, I have a good supply of many brands including the older Mustad, and Eagle Claw.
Adam Saarinen 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2015 Look at the cheaper hooks from Japan! In my mind nothing crap has ever come out of Japan!
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2015 Look at the cheaper hooks from Japan! In my mind nothing crap has ever come out of Japan! Maruto is a good brand and not as pricey as some of the other Japanese hooks. Maruto is Japan's oldest hook maker, and has a big following with the offshore big game guys. I suspect that some "house" brands being sold now are Maruto. I tied a lot of flies on Maruto hooks when I tied commercially, and cannot say anyone had an issue with them, at least not that I was told.

JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2015 This is always an interesting discussion, and it comes up from time to time. All I know for sure is: I caught a hell of a lot of fish before I knew what a jewelry store hook, with jewelry store price, looked like. There is no doubt hook technology has advanced greatly in the last 30 years or so. TideWater makes a lot of good points. In my experience, the hook must be considered part of the overall system, and the highest quality only matters if everything else is perfect. If you are unable to tie a great knot and you break off a good fish because your knot failed, it made absolutely zero difference if you used the "best" hook on the planet. As a fly tyer, it would be sort of silly to spend two hours crafting a beautiful deer hair bug or two days on a full dress salmon fly using a piece of crap hook. A balance must be found. artimus001 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2015 has anyone tried Dohimoto hooks? there is a Canadian Ebay seller that has (what seems to be) great deals on hooks. 525 assorted hooks for $25 CAN. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/525-Fly-Tying-Hooks-assortment-nymph-streamer-trout-bass-panfish-/141568983183?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20f62b408f
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2015 has anyone tried Dohimoto hooks? Yes, I've purchased some from that seller. I've not tied a lot on them as yet, but visually they compare very much to the Maruto hooks, so IMO are a hook I could see using instead of higher priced hooks. That seller & Hardy Deluxe both sell that brand. I've bought hooks from both & have no issue with either seller or the hooks. Mileage may vary.
Steven Wiersma 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2015 Green Caddis hooks, offered here, are very good. Meet all of my criteria; price, quality, styles, availability, supplier with positive externalities.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2015 Hooks, Green Caddis, offered here are very good. Meet all of my criteria; price, quality availability, a local supplier. My experience so far with them has also been limited, but I agree with you. Not a bad hook at all. IMO, similar to hooks I've gotten from Allen & from JStockard, both of which are fine. As I said previously, I suspect many of these are from the same sources, so it would stand to reason the hooks would be the same.
artimus001 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2015 thanks tidewater for your input. seeings how i'm not out fishing for trophies, or going on the fishing trip of a lifetime, these hooks should fit the bill. being able to drop my average hook price from $.15 to $.04 is huge. free shipping is hard to beat as well.
