I fish a bead head birds nest with Hares mask as dubbing on various rivers here in norcal with success when there are caddis in the water. The ribbing on mine are just copper wire.

The Dubbing is a homemade mixture, the hackle is Lemon Wooduck

Yea those things are a mess but I bet they trap lots of air bubbles. Its been said many times buggy is better.

When I started tying and I tied up my first hare's ears I tied them up as neat as I could and I remember one day I caught a rainbow on one and left it on my rod and the next day I caught another rainbow the next morning and this one was a little bigger and had some teeth, after I released the fish I checked my fly and leader and the fly was a little chewed up. The fish picked out the dubbing for me and made the fly better. I must have caught like six or seven fish that day on that one fly then I lost it to a snag. Ever since then I tie the abdomen neat and the thorax scraggly with a split thread dubbing loop. After dip testing in my fish tank I see that the old method doesnt trap hardly any bubbles and the new method traps lots and lots and the work quite well for me.

Not sure about the air bubbles. But I do know there are to kinds of flies, one to catch fishermen in the shop and one to catch fish in the water!
