Oh, Deer

Recommended Posts

I've been getting into spinning deer hair lately and need a supplier for good quality dyed hair. So, where do you guys buy your hair from? I am looking for larger pieces (12x4) to (12x12) inches. I bought the large hareline "select" deer and it has a ton of fur. I know it would be ideal to go to my local shop but I live on an island and the closest shop (30 miles) has just a couple small pieces in stock. Thanks!

Buying hair you can't see is tricky. But I understand your dilemma. I spent 30 minutes last week going through a rack of hundreds of packs to get just 11 I liked. You should look at the Whitetailflytieing web site, even if you don't order from them. It has lots of good information on different types of hair. Read up on threads too. They have large pieces of hair as well as primo strips. They get 1.33 per sq inch for long white coarse belly hair. Rump or body hair is much less. When you order over the net and they pick your order, you will get the hair on the end of the rack. If you call and talk to them and let them know what you want you might do better. Depending on what you want to tie it may not have the length you need. Coarse belly hair is best for stacking. The skin will not be tanned. It will be hard. Ebay can work if they show the actual picture of the hair you are getting but expect a good percentage not to be suitable for say large bass bugs. Pat Cohen sells belly hair on his site RUSUPERFLY. I don't believe he sells the primo strips or the larger pieces you are looking for. All of the hair I purchased from his web site was good and some of it was better than good. hope some of this helps and tight wraps. Oh and post some pictures in the fly of the month thread.

My local shop only sell dyed hair in 3"x3" patches, too. But they do sell undyed or minimally dyed hair in 3"x12" strips.

Hi Jason,

I second what johnny wrote about trying Whitetail Fly Tying. Even though Chris passed away last Thanksgiving, he sold his shop way before, and more than likely trained Mike and Nancy all about deer hair. He used to have entire hides of deer besides selling smaller pieces. If you needed a really large piece, he would have it. He would even send you samples if you were looking for something specific with numbers on each piece to re-match what you wanted in a larger piece if one of them was right.

Regards,

Mark

If you are ever in West Yellowstone, Blue Ribbon Files is the shop for deer hair. They have open bins of hiar they buy and grade and process themselves. It is teh best place for a tier that knows what they want.

Silver ... thanks for the reference. I looked up "Blue Ribbon Flies" and got the store. You don't need to be near Yellowstone to shop there.
