LuciV 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Hi guys, a couple of buzzers that I tied with condor substitute. Hope you like them I love this material and I used staring a few years ago on nymphs, wet and dry flies. For me looks great especially on buzzers like these ones best, Lucian
Fisherboy0301 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Looks like a goose or turkey biot... Right?
LuciV 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 No, with goose biots you cannot tye on hook size #12 and #10. ore than that are not so wide and not so resistant. These are condor substitutes from Mouche Devaux France:
Fisherboy0301 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Looks like turkey biots then. They are MUCH longer than goose biots
whatfly 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 Yup, sure looks like turkey to me as well, FB. I wonder how much extra they charge when they call it "condor substitute"? Same colors are readily available from Hareline or my favorite, Nature's Spirit. Seems like an awful lot of effort for a chironomid pattern, but nice tie, regardless. troutguy 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2015 VERY Nice flies. Nice lighting in your photos. I seem to remember that when I started tying you could still buy condor. Was it still legal in the 60's?
Stevester 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2015 Probably Troutguy. Most of the endangered species stuff started coming in the late 60's early 70's. I started in the mid-70's and I vaguely remember that you could get some legacy condor but it was rare and expensive. Do you remember the shop in California, Buzzes I think it was called? They used to have some exotic materials that you can no longer get or even posses in some cases. I still remember debating whether to order the silver monkey hair for some streamers. troutguy 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2015 I think I may have bought a feather from the Darbees in NY. Did it look like the brown wing of a peacock? The wing of a peacock or peafowlhas a great biot too.
LuciV 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2015 They look similar because are feathers but I'm sure that these feathers are not from turkey or goose. These are more wide in barbs and more resistant. Tying time for a fly like this one is around 3 min. A very easy to tie type of fly
flytire 0 Report post Posted April 29, 2015 you can achieve the same effect with 1 strand of turkey tail, pheasant tail, goose wing fiber etc
Harold Ray 0 Report post Posted May 10, 2015 Lucian. I always love your flies and photographt; both are visual treats. These buzzers are the same, beautiful. I enjoy tying biots; the effect is neat and effective. Thanks again!! Ray

cheech 0 Report post Posted May 11, 2015 100% Turkey biots (long side). I tie a lot of midges like this and the result is identical.
