Crackaig 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2015 Whatever system you settle on for attaching your leader to your fly line there is one really important thing you must be able to do. You need to be able to make a connection while out on the water. It doesn't have to be your preferred connection, any that are effective will do. There are many things that can go wrong which may mean you need to start again from scratch. You don't want to have to give up fishing early, because you didn't bring your heat gun and a generator with you, to make a new welded loop on the water. Nail knot, Nail less nail knot and Grey's loop, are all good connections that will get you through to the end of the day, if something goes wrong. You don't have to use any of these all the time, but it is well worth knowing one of them for that time when something does go wrong. Think of them as an insurance policy. Cheers, C. Fly Fishing Russia 0 Report post Posted May 19, 2015 On all my F lines I make a loop (thread + glue) to attach the leader. On the tips of the S & FS lines I put a tippet ring, and tie a tippet using Improved Clinch knot.
Freddo 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 Does anyone use a Palomar to attach your tippet ring to your taper section of the leader? I know the improved clinch knot is a good one (esp. if the line can be doubled through the eye) but I've heard that the Palomar is one of the strongest knots for fishing and I use it whenever possible with other types of fishing. mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2015 I only use the Palomar for braided line on conventional gear. When I first learned the knot, I tried it with mono, and found it didn't always make a strong knot.
