June Flies from the Vice

Recommended Posts

Mike, neither are either! I did the tag first. Then wound the black thread down to the tag on a second bobbin. Twisted the two threads together and wound back to the thorxa. The red as a rib; the green in touching turns.

Simple, but because there is so little to them everything has to be right. any gaps, lumps etc show up.

Cheers,

C.

SBPatt, that just might be the design I need for the Hopper Dropper swap. Since I don't do hoppers that should work fine to hold up a small dropper. Looks good. Thinking a thin strip of foam for body to add a little more buoyancy and you might be as unsinkable as the Titanic.

Body can be tied in red, yellow, chartreuse, etc.

hook - TMC 5212 #10

thread - Danville 6/0 brown

tail - deer hair dyed dark brown

body - Uni-stretch orange

body hackle - brown (undersize by 2)

wing - deer hair dyed dark brown

hackle - brown

This pattern is based on the Kolzer Dark Caddis. An old McKenzie River Oregon pattern originated by John Kolzer. It was unusual for a caddis pattern with its upright wing. The Kolzer Dark Caddis had a orange yarn or dubbing body and I believe a single upright wing. Anyway it's a great old pattern. Thanks for posting it.

And yes VC, it works great with a dropper.

This one goes back a few years; a vintage pattern for the St. Joe River in Idaho. Original was tied with duck quill segment wings and green wool body - I stink at duck wings and didn't have any green wool so substitutions were freely applied (grey background kinda washes out the wings, but they are there). There's also a version tied with orange body, grizzly hackle-tip wings which may, or may not, be called a St. Joe Special.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #12

thread - Danville 6/0 black

tail - golden pheasant tippets

body - dubbing green

wing - hen hackle tips dun

hackle - grizzly

Regards,

Scott
