Light rod for big fish?

Recommended Posts

Me and a few of my buddies went fishing for striper/ LMB and I was using a wright and McGill 10' 7 weight and one of my buddies was using a wright and McGill 9' 5 weight and he was chucking 7" gizzard shad imitations easily he said he doesn't remember what line he used but he was able to handle 2 fish that were over 35" I was gonna purchase the same rod anyway do u think I could be able to duplicate this performance with my rod

Of course you can, if you have the skills.

You can always cast smaller flies with a heavier rod. I might not be as fun catching 7 inch trout on a 7 weight, but there's nothing keeping you from tossing size 18 flies with it.

On the other hand, his 5 weight will run out of ability as he tries larger and larger flies. You'll be able to go a little large than him, provided you're both at the same casting level.

anything is possible if you fight the fish properly. If you arent going to keep the fish just take the time to walk it properly so it doesn't die from exhaustion. I use a 9'7wt bamboo with Rio saltwater line. my reel is old (Dont even know its make) and i love the fight. so i say do it to it.
