johnnyquahog 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2015 Dan - that 4/0 frog is on fire. great job! What size legs did you go with? and are you coating the belly or face with anything (liquid fusion, acrylic, etc)? thanks and keep them coming.

deerhairdan 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2015 Thank you guys! I do my frogs a bit different from other deer hair guys.....I trim the faces completely flat and coat it with UV resin. This gives a while different action for the frogs in the water. It pops extremely loud. I have no biases for any UV or others...this face I happened to use Solarez flex...but sometimes I use Deer Creek flex....or Loon. On 4/0 hooks, ive been using 2.5" frog legs from Pat. Its only my second time using the legs honestly..but I really really love them. I use copic markers and sharpies to color them.... Before I used magnum rabbit strips and ripped the hair off the pelt all the way down to where the feet would be and I would create sort-of a mono skeleton to keep the legs from fouling during casts. Ive tried using bunches of round rubber legs tied together but they foul like crazy. I have also used bucktail tied on a paperclip, bent to shape. Pat's legs are by far the best option in my opinion. Fish only care about profile of the legs, and this profile is as realistic as it can get....and you don't need any type of anti-fouling contraption. Some fly "purists" don't like the idea of pre-made stuff you just tie on a hook and call a fly, but it still takes some skill and patience to make them look good. The poison toad went to a little 6 year old kid, whose mom works with my girlfriend. Hes apparently my biggest fan
TheCream 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2015 Not all deer hair has to float. Or be big. These are small streamers I intend to use on light gear for creek bass if the cricks ever get back in their banks and clean up around here.
deerhairdan 0 Report post Posted July 16, 2015 Those looks really good dude. What is the recipe? looks like arctic fox tail with a bit of marabou for color, cactus chenille, legs and deer hair? That would wreck bass in the reservoir here. Olive over orange

I tied these on size 6 4xl streamer hooks. -Eyes: X small lead dumbbell -Tail: arctic fox -Body: Ice Chenille -Legs: centipede legs -Head/collar: deer hair

deerhairdan 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2015 Nice bug @STMflies @JFinn - Its essentially a deceiver tail (schlappen and flash over a little solid base of bucktail for support), Popovich's "hollow fleye" body (reverse bucktail with some very light flash material IE-angel hair or DNA Chromosome (dont want to use heavy because it will really bugger up the look in the water...at least in my opinion.... ), with a reverse tied pseudo hair head (I used three reverse ties for that head....orange first, then yellow, then chartreuse for the blend.....which ever color you tie on first shows up on the outside because of the reverse tie...)..I think the "proper" term for this style head is "veiled"...To keep the head material at bay, use a little bit of Loon Flow on the face of the pseudo hair, this gives just enough structure to keep the synthetic hair properly oriented....you dont want to screw that step up or the fly will twist around in the water...it needs to be straight......The hackle is tied in before the head material. I like to put them at an angle like that because it looks like the lines of a fish body. (I got this idea from Andreas Andersson - the dude is a mad genius) I just got some nice badger dyed saddle from Whiting farms I am going to try using as a lateral line next. I posted a video of this fly in the water on my instagram last night....it looks very very good in the water - if i do say so myself haha Im glad you guys dig it.
