jd1983 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2015 Just curious if anyone knows how the TMC 8089 compares to the B10S. Would they be roughly equivalent to one another. Are there other comparable hooks out there to the 8089?

WVUontheFLY 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2015 the b10s is a slightly heavier gauge hook and the TMC size 2 is about the same size as the b10s 2/
whatfly 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2015 Other than the fact that you can get the TMC8089 nickel plated, the two hooks are essentially interchangeable. I perfer the B10S because it is more readily available, is cheaper than TMC when you buy by the 100's, and the hook is painfully sharp. YMMV.
jd1983 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2015 whatfly - do you see the same size difference between the two? I like the B10S and they are used in a ton of patterns.
Bugsy 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2015 I have none to compare now, but I agree (with WVU) that the gape of a B10S in sizes #2/0 and #1 is roughly the same as the 8089 in sizes #2 and #6, respectively. A bit more shank on the 8089.
Goose77 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2015 These are both historically popular hooks for bassbug tying...the late Chris Helm said the B10s was the most popular bassbug hook sold in his shop. Dave Whitlock's work has popularized the 8089. The 8089 has much finer wire and a slightly longer shank. This means there's more room on the shank to pack hair [due to the length]. The lighter shank gives better floatation, but also affords less ballast. For standard hair poppers I usually use the B10s...I like the extra weight for ballast, and the shank strength. The strength is important because I like a 2 layer thread base to stack deerhair...it keeps the hair bundles from twisting, and allows the stacked hair to be packed much tighter. When I do this with the 8089 I get hook breakage about 10 to 20% of the time; and it always occurs as the fly is finished...not at the beginning. So, that wastes about an hour of time and alot of material. If you spin the hair this isn't as big a problem...the 8089 is fine here.
Goose77 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2015 Oh yeah, one more thing. The eye on the 8089 is smaller and much neater on it's closure than the B10s...this means as you finish the last bunches on a deerhair bug, the thread is much less likely to get cut on the eye or stuck in the eye. That is an advantage. However, the larger eye on the B10s makes it easier to spin/stack the last bunch of hair...the thread won't roll of the eye as easily. The eye closure on the B10s is not as tight. I close this gap with my thread base before getting to the last bunch of hair so the thread won't get caught. Hope this helps.
