"Green" Swap...Floss and Herl combo

Recommended Posts

Mine will be going in the mail tomorrow. I tied a size 10 hook white ostrich feather tail, orange floss body with a peacock herl collar and a gold bead. I hope these fit the bill!

Nick,

Flies have left the building. Dropped 'em at the Post Office on the way to work this morning. Green Gossamer silk floss, peacock herl, and reverse hackle--tenkara style. Also work well as a caddis pupa impression :-)

Thanks for hosting!

John

You are correct djd but there are established names attached to the many types of Coachman flies. Your version with the hair for wings is called the Royal Wullf. The standard Royal Coachman would normally have white mallard wings. Then it can be tied with Grizzly Hackle tips, as a swept back hair wing like a streamer, even as a parachute. The main ingredient to all the Royal family is the herl and floss. Tie one identical to yours with different color floss and they change the name. Tennessee Wullf is green floss. Then you can have Yellow Wullf, White Wullf, all the same fly with different floss colors.

Biggest single advantage for the Wullf family is visibility and high flotation.

You learn something new everyday!

Thanks for the info by the way!

Okay, got front page updated. We're halfway home. Looking darn good too. This may be the first swap with a Virginia Wulff in it, but not the last.

Big haul at the Post today. 3 arrivals for here with Horseshoes showing her talents again, Crackleback and Add147 make their usual great contributions. Crackleback will get special mention on Monthly Thread.

Dubs flies came in today and I'm telling you, this is a pattern that's going to catch fish and we are all going to be copying to have more of them in our box.

Flies are all in and really looking good. I'll get them sorted later today and go out in mail tomorrow. This will be the first chance for many of us to have our own "Virginia Wullf" in our fly boxes, along with several more standard ties and some great little streamers.

Speaking of the Virginia Wullf from Netabrookie he also included a strip of foam with Wullfs starting at size 18 and growing to size 8 and all beautiful ties. I have permission from him to make that one of the bonuses in the Christmas swap and whoever gets them has some high quality ties to add to his dry fly box.
