Fly Tying Storage

Recommended Posts

I got some similar containers at Sally's Beauty Supplies..... My wife frequents that place. I found some little acrylic jars with plastic lids in a variety of sizes. I keep my spare ultralight spool in one, so you have an idea of their size. Like Mike, I have bead, doll eyes, etc. in them.

The ones I got ... I am not even sure if a quarter will fit. They are cylinders, with the height equal to the diameter. The small size is about a "nickle" diameter and the large one about a "quarter" diameter, but I've never put a coin in one to see if it'd actually fit.

I guess I should have clarified a little more. This is my current set up. It works; it's clean, organized, and was sufficient. Due to the tying I am doing now, I need more workspace, ie the desk is too small. So I plan on building a desk, already have the wife's approval, that will be almost the expanse of that wall. I'm going to get rid of that tall tower of drawers and get two more smaller ones. The kind of storage I am looking for is on desk storage that keeps the frequently used items (thread, hooks, beads, flash, etc) handy and close. I know you can buy storage containers that work in that capacity, but I don't buy flies so why would I buy the storage?

The very best advice I can offer is to make your storage system as flexible and expandable as possible. It seems like I am always changing my materials around since I keep accumulating and very often "forget" that I have something simply because it is buried with similar items. I keep most of my infrequently used tools in an artist's table top carousel - my often used tools (scissors, hackle pliers, whip finisher, bodkin) are in a small wooden block with drilled holes to accept the tools - for bobbins, I keep many pre-loaded with my favorite threads all ready to go - these are stored by poking the tube end in a block of packing foam (this leaves the thread exposed so I can quickly find the thread and color necessary for the pattern I am tying.

I've been doing this for awhile, and my hoard never gets smaller, even though I give away stuff to the needy. I have a cheap roll top desk with drawers, a fairly wide old 3 drawer dresser, some rubbermades, a bunch of bins, etc. I have everything in zip lock bags. It is fairly organized, fur with fur, hair with hair, etc. I know where everything is. I'll take. Picture after I get it straightened up a bit.
