Quacker 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 Does anyone know where I can find butterfly patterns. I don't plan on fishing these they're for safety pin flys for kids so I need something that looks realistic but fast to tie. I tied some last year and the kids were requesting them, so I ended up tying them as they waited, just made something up as I tied. This year I would like to be better prepared and have something tied and ready to hand out. I would be grateful for any help or direction. Quacker 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 Does anyone have any fun safety pin patterns for kids?
mikechell 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 There is a "safety pin" swap going on right now ... but I think it's full. If you go through the "realistic" forum on this site, you might find some patterns. Good luck finding actual butterfly patterns.
FlaFly 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 Go to the database (top of this page) and search for the word Butterfly. You'll find a few. When you select a good one, you'll find that some of the tyers have done more than one. also Google Images "butterfly fishing fly"
hairwing 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 When I think of butterfly patterns this is who comes to mind......http://www.scottcesariflytying.com/. He even has a "How to Tie a Butterfly" dvd.
FlaFly 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2015 Just for an alternative, I found some time ago an article by Leon Guthrie at www.salmonfly.net/contributor12.html regarding wings for butterfly flies. Go to that site and scroll down to the bottom of his page to Novelty Flies. You'll see the link on butterfly wings.

Quacker 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2015 Last time I tied these on safety pins I used feather wings that came out looking ok, at least the kids seemed to think so. They still need a lot of work . What I don't know is how I should be tying the body.
Gene L 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2015 Back a LONG time ago, my mother made butterfly pins out of nylon stockings stretched over a wire frame. She dyed the nylon, of course.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2015 What I don't know is how I should be tying the body. I do not remember where I saw it, but there was a thread ... or a website ... that showed great butterfly bodies made from foam cylinders. The cylinders were several inches long, 1/8 of an inch in diameter. They could be cut to length, tied onto the look at the precise locations to separate abdomen, thorax and head and looked fairly real.
FlaFly 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2015 Mike... I'm guessing you're referring to Wapsi foam. It comes in cylindrical pieces of various diameters. They make perfect bodies, and they float, where other bodies like chenille might not.

FlaFly 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2015 Flytire That bat is just what I needed to have on a safety pin to wear to the Hallowe'en dance (sitting on my shoulder). There's always next year. How did you do that? A SBS anywhere?
