Losing my best friend

Recommended Posts

This must be me being a big ol sap, but with my school schedule being crazy (almost in the podiatry program) I don't have the time that my dog deserves to get so I have to get rid of him. This is really off topic of fishing, but man I just gotta let it all out. My dog is like my son. I love him so much. He's one of the smartest dogs I've ever owned, let alone the lost trained dog I've ever heard of. Damn, I'm gonna miss him. I get so angry that all these people with their untrained dogs that treat them like crap get to keep their dogs and I have to get rid of mine. It blows. It's a hard decision but I know it's what is best for him.

Nope ... I'd never get rid of him.

Most dogs will get used to any schedule, as long as you can spend some time each day, even a little. Dogs can be trained to use a "Potty Patch" (http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/1/1/45667-potty-patch-large-indoor-washroom-dogs.html) so they can be left indoors for longer periods of time. If you can't do either of those ...

Find a friend that can keep him for a while.

Don't make it permanent.

Good luck

Mike and Adam, he is going to one of my good friends in California. I'll be in the podiatry program next fall and will be tied up with school for 4 years which I'll have to get rid of him then due to us moving for that. After long nights of thinking what is best for him, it's the best thing for him. He's one of the most well trained dogs I've ever had, let alone met for that fact. Definitely going to be hard without him, but he's going to be better off with my friends who are set in their careers and don't have any kids yet to take up their time, he's amazing with kids too.

I am very sorry...looks like you've found a good home for him. I love my dogs like family...can't imagine something like this. Condolences, Ed

Thanks Ed, they took off back to California this morning. It's been a rough transition to life without a dog. I constantly find myself almost saying his name ever hour or so like usual. It's like losing a son, something I'd never wish on anyone.

Thanks to everyone dealing with a sappy college kid going through some of life's storms.

My family has the 'dumbest' dog ever, it must have taken me a month just to get her trained to sit, and leave it was several months, get down is almost working after a year, and heel is seemingly never going to work, although "right now" occasionally works as heel. I'm no animal trainer but all the other dogs I've owned picked commands up pretty quick. My wife wanted a pug so that is what we got, they must be one of slowest learning dog breeds on the planet. I will give her that if I have a shotgun she will stay at my heels unless I tell her otherwise, but the moment anyone other than my wife or daughter is near by she won't listen to a thing. College is definitely a difficult time to have a dog, I had to give my last dog to an elderly couple because I couldn't predictably be around enough during college and driving 40 miles back and forth to work. It does suck, but the dogs are far more happy with someone who can spend time with them rather than being locked or leashed up for 12 hours a day.

The hard part was he is a smart dog. Could learn something new in 20 mins and was just the biggest gentle giant. I know he's going to be happier where he is now

that stinks, I had to put my husky down a year and a half ago that was hard but her quality of life was taking its toll somedays she could barely get up to walk.

do you think you will be able to visit some day with him?

At least one thing you know is he went to a good home too.
