Tying your own furled leaders

Recommended Posts

I use that same tutorial and video. I can make a furled or twisted leader streamside in about 5 or 10 minutes if needed. But usually I don't have unless something catastrophic happens. It has gotten to the point where I only bring 4x and 5x tippet spools with me nowadays. I can build the entire leader out of those. Stiff in the butt and turns over EASILY...I dont understand the whining about water getting on you. Sounds a little dumb to me since we are standing IN the water catching WET fish. But that's allright I guess.

Furling leaders is a very simple task. Learning how to do it is not so simple since there is so much crap about it on the Internet. Hand furling as shown in the posted video is frustrating and produces an inferior leader. The video showing the jig is another exercise in frustration because it has you spinning from one end and then doubling the line over and doing it again. Fortunately I've waded through the crap and figured it out. Here's a picture of my jig. It's fully adjustable because I use spring clamps to hold my posts. Aside from the spring clamps it can be made for less then the cost to buy a single furled leader. I made a simple gear box and spin both legs at one time with a drill. The gear box is just scrap plywood and gears salvaged from an old VCR.

When I have some more time ill add a tutorial that will clearly show the process so everybody can see how simple it is to do. It will make you scratch your head at why some charge 8 to 12 bucks for A furled leader. I can make 2 or 3 leaders from one 2 dollar spool of 6/0 uni.
