January flies from the vise

Recommended Posts

I tried to quote you guys.

Yeah a Ring burner. Can't think of the origin of the name, but probably has something to do with the orange colour. It's essentially an orange CI (Christmas Island) Special bonefish pattern that uses either arctic fox or finn raccoon in this instance.

I think it was developed / tweaked originally by a mate of mine who ties commercially.

Will do some more research to see if I can find out the origin of the name.

I was thinking that fly cost so much to make that the Wife decided to "burn" her wedding ring and melt it down.

Or, as Flafly suggested, it'll burn going in and coming out, like Mexican food.

What does "ring burner" mean in fly tying jargon? Or is it salt water jargon.

ive never heard it in saltwater talk however it looks like a bonefish fly and they are known as burners.

Could it be it's a hot bite ?

Eide, those are good looking flies. Flytire, that is a cool idea, and I'd bet it sinks more quickly than the original...with a resin head it might be like a jig. Nice work you guys. Cheers, Ed

Found this version on Kieron Jenkins blog http://ronsfishing.com/2013/05/24/its-mayfly-time/ Tied here as a March Brown; change colors to suit your needs

hook - Tiemco 300 #10

thread - Danville 6/0 brown

tail - pheasant tail

abdomen - dubbing tan

rib - pheasant tail (twisted it with tying thread for re-enforcement; wire rib could be used, as well)

wing - CDC brown dun

thorax - Haretron dark

hackle - barred rusty dun

Regards,

Scott

I've been told that "wee willy wigglers" were getting fish ... so I pulled out the tying gear to try to tie some.

I don't have the materials. I do have the tail material (cut some before leaving Florida) ... but I think they're tied on much smaller hooks. And the bead I have don't fit ...

Anyway ... I tried to tie something that might work similarly. Here's the result.

Hopefully, I'll get some more time to tie before fishing on Saturday.

Looks like Richmc and I will get a little fishing in tomorrow morning. I'll fish his way if he catches a fish before I do. But I am going to try some stuff I brought along, too.

Tying flies with what I brought ... maybe some pearl minnows will catch a few.

If you're interested ... I did a little SBS, too.
