TMC 5262 - Jig Hook Equivalent

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've got a real need to tie a Bird's Nest on a jig hook. I like this fly tied on a TMC 5262, #10 - #14, no bead (wire under the thorax). So, I've been looking around and I'm not sure i'm finding the closest TMC 5262 jig hook equivalent. Any thoughts / input would be welcome. Thanks!

Adrian

I assume you're putting a bead on the jig hook and tying it upside down. That'll change the look enough that you'll probably have to play around with the pattern. I'd start with the longest shank jig hook that you can find, to approximate the 2xl 5262, but the bead will take up some of the shank.

I've made a lot of lead heads in my time. Google: Do It Molds and look under their hook selection. I think the smallest you might find is a #10

There is no such thing, to the best of my knowledge. Jig hooks are not as 'standarized' as normal hooks, so you will have to match length/size and the usual recommendation, something like the Mustad 32833BLN will only go down to size 10. Best bet would be the Umpqua C400BL or the equivalent from one of the European hook manufacturers. They are all going to be bit short, but if you upsize it should serve.

Take a look at the Daiichi 4640 or 4647, both have a longer hook shank than Hanak, Hends, Dohiku...etc...

However, they are barbed and come packaged 15 hooks to the small sized...They have a 60 degree bend.

J.Stockard has them:

There is plenty of room to get all this and a slotted Tungsten Bead on those hooks:

You could try a Daiichi 1740. It's an up eye, 2X long, 2X heavy hook. If you are careful, you might be able to bend the eye to be more perpendicular to the hook shank. Perhaps this will give you the type of fly movement you are looking for.
