Need skirt help

Recommended Posts

So, I am building a jig/crawfish on a #2 jig hook. I have two hackle off the back, an ice dubbing body, a rubber skirt and lead eye. I am wondering how to get the skirt to look like a jig. When I google it, I only get results for jigs or a few legs. I thing i should just fold the skirt in half and tie it. It should wrap around the hook body, but I am wanting to confirm before I jack something up.

Thanks,

Depends on whether you're using skirt layers, what fly shops call "sili legs" or a spinner bait skirt.

Sounds like you're using a skirt layer so you're on the right track. You can wrap it around the hook and then wrap it down, or you can split the skirt and tie in half on the top, half on the bottom. Which is what I did with this one except I used one color on top and side and a different color on the bottom,

Another example of wrapping the skirt around the hook and building a thread head over it.

On this one I used a full spinner bait skirt. Built the thread up in front of the body, so it fit tightly, a bit of Krazy Glue to secure then built a thread head in front of it.

Thank you. I ended up taking the two ends and tying them to each side. The I cut the legs in half and then the ends that were connected. I am going to build up the body to get a larger spread of legs on the next batch I tie.

Very nice tie. This might save you a step. When you wrap the ends down just cover them with thread then all you need to do is cut them in half or to the desired length. If you're planning on tying a bunch of them, you should check out the on line catalogs like Jann's Netcraft or Barlow's. Not sure what a pack of "Crazy Legs" costs but a pack of 20 skirt layers will run around $5 depending on the type. Both usually will let you mix and match colors of the same type.
