Deer Hair Razor Blade Tool

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

At a tying night this week, a guy had a tool that looked like a bobbin, but it held a double-sided razor blade. It had a collar on it, and as you moved it, it curved the blade. I forget what it was called or who made it, but i think it was made somewhere in the NE. Anyone know what I'm talking about and have a link?

Thanks!

I don't know if you need that. I googled "Deer Hair Razor Blade Tool" and came across a great post Safer Deer Hair Trimming.

I don't know how tight an Exacto tool can hold a double-edge razor blade but why not try it?

My problem with using a curled double-edged razor blade is I tend to trim farther than I wanted to!

ANOTHER fly fishing / fly tying solution in search of a problem.... if you have a finger and an opposable thumb on at least one hand you've got what you need. If you don't have that, then, maybe that's the problem this kind of tool solves.

Or if you have hands that's put the wrong way on the arms, this can save a lot of blood.... (I saved a couple of liters so fat I guestimate) :-D

But hey, a tying vise is also another fly fishing / fly tying solution in search of a problem.

Only need to tie flies is really: Hook, materials, good wax and a scissor.... :-P

I'm most likely to slice a finger taking the dang things out of their wrappers. The last time I did that I found maybe the worst spot to get sliced on your fingers: inside corner of the thumb where the nail meets the skin. It was a royal pain for a few days until it healed.

You could make the collar wider so the fingers of the pushing hand are protected from the exposed blade facing back toward user.

Hey Guys, Just following back up. I received the tool from Andy last week and put it through its paces over the weekend. It's really well made, and makes easy work of deer hair flies. For $15 bucks, it's a great tool. And it's cheaper than an ER copay, which is a huge plus if you are anything like me with fly tying and open razor blades.

Andy-- The deluxe one you send me is awesome.
