Recommended Posts

Hot melt glue....seems a craze.... Make different colors not using thread ? Anybody familiar with this around here. Where you get it how it works. They say make it on Teflon non stick stuff then apply to fly. Better google it.....

There are some folks who still use HMG, although far as I can tell, it was replaced by most tyers with epoxy and now UV cured resins. I used to have a link to a site that demonstrated its use but I can't find it anymore. The guy I'm talking about didn't use a glue gun... he cut a small piece of HMG and put it where he wanted it on the working fly, then used a butane lighter to warm, but not melt, the glue.

I tried it some time back, but it's too runny and easy to mess up. HMG does come in a variety of colors, which is a plus, but I don't know how that guy that you posted gets his to be transparent/translucent. All the flies I ever saw were opaque. Here's a pic of one I tried my hand at.

The site that you are thinking about may be Barry Ord Clark's site. Here is his version of your Mutantz. https://thefeatherbender.com/2012/07/24/tying-mutantz/ If it isn't the site it is certainly the technique you mention. He also does a rather nice hot melt glue caddis pupa.

Cheers,

C.

It is known to many on different sites I have to spring for whatever's new and better within reasonable costs. Well, I had to have the HMG system in mikechell's post and I have had it for over a year now. One of these days I'm going to take it out of packaging and see how it works. I expected a small glue gun type system pushing glue out to the hook but it is just a small soldering iron he uses and explains why it is so much better than the glue gun. I do know he sure makes some pretty flies.

Somewhere I read about the wattage of glue guns and soldering irons. I think they were recommending using lower wattage so the iron wouldn't get so hot. But I can't remember who said what, and where, and why. I would guess that a high wattage iron would be so hot that the glue wouldn't be transferrable. Anyone have any idea?

30 watts no trigger....I'll bet I can sharpen it with grinder/ polisher. Not the best point. now where is the glue. Transparent would be nice

denduke..... try looking into wood burning sets. Mine has an assortment of tips and one is a point. it's 20 watts.

Cream..... I'm betting that body and tail are made of foam, and coated with HMG on the head to make it shiny.

I've never used my ant yet, so I don't know how sturdy HMG is as compared with epoxy or UV resin.

I think the flies look really good...what I struggle with conceptually are the HMG dry flies, like this:

What exactly floats this? Am I wrong in assuming hot melt glue sinks?

I assumed hot glue would sink as well. But.......... I filled up a pot with water and threw a stick of elmers hot glue in it and it floated like a cork. Who knew. That's enough science for me.
