Crackaig 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2016 Most of the flies I tie are for trout salmon grayling or sea trout (sea run browns). Orders for pike flies I get are usually passed on to a specialist pike fly tier. However, a mate is getting into pike on the fly, and a free pack of pike fly hooks came along with a free pack of hooks. That means it is time to step outside my regular comfort zone. Here are the first few. I remembered reading on here that a Clouser makes a good pike fly. The bunnies are well known effective flies (and will challenge his casting). The bottom one is my attempt to tie something like I see many others tying. Wow these go through materials! Cheers, C.
Fish For Life 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2016 Good bunch of pike food there. I think whoever you tying them for will be very happy.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 Based on critiques of my own attempts ... the bottom one is a little too thick. About half the material you've got, is what I've been told. But, from my point of view ... that's a great looking set of big fish flies.
Philly 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 They'll catch fish. The first one is a bit sparse, the flash should attract pike. I agree with Mike on the last one. Way too much material. Google V-tying and High tying. You can get the same illusion of bulk with about 1/3 the material.
Crackaig 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 Thanks. I'll take a look around before I do any more. What may be the problem with the bottom one is that I made the ball of dubbing a bit on the large side. It throws the material out. However, I do want to do less. These are all made from odds and ends of materials I have around. Cheers, C.
Hatchet Jack 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2016 http://www.frankenfly.com/category/muskie/ Lots of big flies shown as you scroll down the photos column. A friend of mine has some flies that he bought from a veritable 'artiste' and the flies all have one common trait - BIG in front, then long loose slender material flowing behind the big. Makes the flies have motion without movement as they say. Your two middle flies fit the bill nicely. Caveat: tying a really good effective fly like these takes beaucoup materials and I'm finding out it's far more than just slapping a glob of stuff on a hook.
