Gamakatsu vs. Partridge of Redditch

Recommended Posts

Has anyone seen any comparisons or reviews that are attempting to give the pros and cons of these two manufacturers? I tie on mostly Gamakastu B10S for my streamers, but Partridge is starting to get really popular and makes a wide variety of hooks just like Gama. I've been searching but haven't found anything yet.

What do you tie on (for streamers) and why??

Thanks!

I use both depending on the end use and particular profile I need.

Both hooks are of equal excellent quality, one not being any better than the other. As I said, I use both depending on what I am tying.

The B10S is a great hook but it is only available up to 2/0 and the shank is shorter than the Universal Predator X that is available up to 8/0.

I have used many B10S hooks for trout size articulated streamers. For my pike flies I go for the UPX 4/0 & 6/0 tied either on the hook shank or used for tube flies.

Both are good brands & I use too many different hooks, both brands & styles to list. Why? Because I can! I also tie on many hooks not sold as "fly" hooks.

That link that Mike posted is the best resource there is for fly hook comparisons.

Choosing hooks is like anything else in this sport, mostly personal preference. There can be reasons to choose specific brands & styles such as what FIN-ITE 34 posted about size range differences. We all also like & dislike different things. No right or wrong, just what works for each of us.

I like those B10 hooks, but also like Partridge, and Owner, and some Mustad, and Eagle Claw, and etc., etc., etc. Depends on what I need from them. If I'm tying to target panfish, I don't have the same need if I'm tying to target Striped Bass, even if tying the exact same pattern & size.

I don't feel that any hook made today is "poor", but certainly some are better than others for specific purposes.

In addition to tying, I also make lures. Been doing both for 40 to 50 years. I probably have 100,000 or more hooks on hand right now, ranging from about a size 20 up to about a 10/0, so I've had a lot of experience with choosing hooks. smile.png

"Starting" to get popular? Partridge has been around for quite some time, and for the most part has an excellent reputation. Gamakatsu by comparison is the new guy on the block comparatively, when discussing fly hooks. Like Finite, I tend to favor hook styles more than brand, but availability is also a key criteria, and Gamakatsu's are much more readily available in my area than Partridge. Furthermore, the Predator hook is bloody expensive, compared to the B10S in similar sizes. When you get into the larger serious Gamakatsu hooks, like the SC11, SC15 or SC15-2H, the CS86X is comparably or better priced, but unlike Finite, there is nothing I chase on a regular basis that would require that much iron.
