FlatsRoamer 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2016 Hey guys, looking to add to my arsenal with a nautilus fly reel. Something at max 275$, large arbor, made for the salt, disc drag, and with color(gotta have style). I know Nautilus has a great rep but I have yet to use one. Does anyone know of any like that? Thanks!
vicente 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2016 Might be able to get they're lowest end model at that price from my searching that's about it. I went with a sage 3880 for my 8 weight picked the reel up on sale for 110 and you can get spare spools from the manufacturer for 60 bucks a pop sealed system. I've dunked mine in donner pretty alkaline water and it still spins just fine.
vicente 0 Report post Posted July 10, 2016 You probably won't be able to find one quite that cheap I lucked out with Sierra trading post.

Swamp Fly 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 Nautilus has a very good reputation. If they are out of your price range then check out Lamson. I've been very pleased with all of mine. The drag system is the same for all of their reels you just pay more or less depending on the material and method of manufacture between models. Sierra Trading Post usually has discontinued models (or soon to be), join the email list and get substantial savings (25% off their listed prices for Gurus right now). Saltybum 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 Allen had a red Kraken but dropped it before I got extra jingles to add with my current teal one. Great customer service. Nautilus charges $45 for service. Allen serviced my Kraken for free. Lamson Guru is a good real for the price. Did well in Yellowstone and Tridents tests. I recently found a slightly older Radius 3.5 like new for dirt cheeeeep. Shop some of the other forums classifieds and ebay for deals and as mentioned Sierra Trading.
FlatsRoamer 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 Does Kraken have a warranty?
utyer 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 I will recommend the Guru from Lamson. There are a couple of different versions, but ALL Lamson reels have the SAME drag. They are well built, and covered by the same warranty no matter the price point. Reel bling will never catch you any fish. A good reel at your price point WILL. mikechell 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 I am so confused. Where are you going to get $275.00? You sure haven't made that much selling flies, yet. Second: Why spend that much on a fly reel? Less than half that ... http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Shop-Classic-Large-Arbor-Fly-Reel/product/10211679/ But then, I am not into impressing every one else with the cost of my toys. I get fishing gear to ... fish with. I don't own a single reel that cost more than $60.00, and I spend a lot of time on the water. This would be MY choice, since I already own three ... http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Shop-Hobbs-Creek-Fly-Reel/product/120829053246139/
FlatsRoamer 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 I am now tying flies for a guide service in the Caymans and that will surely boost my store. Also after this 2 weeks vacations, you bet me and my friend are car washing every day averaging 16$ a day! I'm just gonna save up!
mikechell 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 whatever I still don't understand the "need" to buy a $275 reel when a much less expensive one will do just as well.
Saltybum 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 He will be fishing salt a lot I'm sure. Will a cheep Bass reel hold up?
vicente 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 Fishing in the salt a pretty expensive reel makes sense to me, is probably say who cares about the color and get what could cheapest on sale though. I'd rather spend 150 for a plain black three hundred dollar reel then 275 for a 275 dollar reel in a cool color.
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2016 I'm with Mike on this one.... when I used to fish salt water frequently with my 8 wt I just used what I had- Cabela's Prestige Plus reel and spools. I'm thinking it was perhaps a $40 reel. I took it apart and rinsed it well every time, made a point not to throw it in the sand every time, and I caught a lot of fish. Got on the drag many many times with no problems. Leave it loose, use the spool rim. I'm all about using the best gear you can, within reason.
