Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

I love Hank Patterson- He (Travis) has pointed a comical finger at the sport and I love it. I can not tell you the number of times I have run into the "Snap it "casters on our local famous river. There is one video he does where he is in a fly shop talking about casting 80 feet no 120 feet into 75 MPH winds hooking a rainbow and landing it on 3 jumps as it was blown to him. I love the part where the guys talks about DVD 3 being trout porn - he says but it was actual porn.

as for Orvis they have / have had some good products, I have a couple of older CFO click reels I love. Their big thing - Orvis is Marketing and advertising their web new feed, Tom's pod casts, their guide rendezvous, and the down the hatch film fest all get the name out . There are better rods and reels out there but the Orvis stuff is good.

While I am not a big Orvis fan, they actually have done a lot for the sport and have a lot of decent products if you wade through the over priced stuff.

I volunteer with Project Healing Waters and Orvis is beyond generous with their support.

On the other hand, I chuckle at some of the anglers I see on the water, they look like a catalog.

Reminds me of Dwarf goes fishing lol

I believe it was "Dorf Goes Fishing" with Tim Conway...but you are right!!! The fact we remember it at all kinda dates us doesn't it?

I know that was all in fun, but these days I will not go near Orvis stuff. Not that it isn't any good. The problem is dealing with Orvis UK From what I hear Orvis in the US is nothing like here.

The first problem came when my 8'6" 4wt broke it the bottom furrel for the second time. Since the first time it broke I had moved house. I sent it back with a letter explaining I had moved, "please update your records". About a week later I got a card back saying the rod would be repaired / replaced within a few weeks. I waited, and waited, no rod. I phoned Orvis UK. "We sent the rod back several weeks ago". "Well I haven't got it." I said. They called the delivery company, who told them that it had been delivered. It turns out they had tried to deliver to my old address. When I asked them about this they told me that delivery instructions were not to leave it with neighbours, or outside, only with someone at the address. I knew the old address was still empty, so they had not done that. Orvis UK tried to blame me for not giving them my new address. "Well if that is true how did you send the receipt card to my new address?" Orvis UK contacted the delivery company, who spoke with the driver, he said he had left it with a neighbour "down the street, but couldn't remember what number." The delivery company would not talk to me, as I was not their customer, Orvis UK would take no responsibility for it. In the end I had to go back to my old address and ask around the neighbours, eventually I found it.

Next a pair of their top of the range guide waders. Within a month the material had folded around the tape on the seam and rubbed through by the seam. I sent them back in September. After many enquiries I finally got a reply in January. They would replace them but not until March of the next year. 19 months to replace waders!!!

About that time I also bought the top of the range Guide vest. They sent me a lady's one! (Zip on the wrong way around). The fit was awful. Any weight in the back made it fall and throttle me. The pocket for heamostats had no tab inside to clip them on to. A minor detail but when you pay over £120 for a vest you expect it to be right. I took it to Orvis UK at the Game Fair. They just laughed.

That was their "third strike". Orvis is now out of the running whenever I consider a new purchase. They could produce the finest rod ever, and sell it at a bargain price, I will not buy it. I will not put up with the total lack of customer service from Orvis UK. I can laugh at this now, but Orvis UK will never get another penny of my money.

Cheers,

C.
