McFlyLures 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2016 Watch till the end for the underwater footage... This fly is a lightweight version of a zonker fly, that also is similar to a matuka fly. I dub in the fibers on the front of the fly instead of twisting on the skin of the zonker to keep the weight down and easier to cast with lighter fly rods. I use mink zonker instead of rabbit to keep the fly smaller as well. This can be tied in many colors. White, black, olive, brown, and cream are some of the most popular streamer colors. Hook: Umpqua U103 - size 12 Thread: Ultra thread - 70 denier - color olive Tail: Mink zonker - color olive Under body: Mink zonker hair and gold small wire Body: Mink zonker dubbing brushCheck out the fly at the video below, or go to my website for more information at the link below the video. vicrider 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2016 Nice fly and great video. I'm not totally sold on how this would work on other videos but I do give this one a big
Dave G. 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2016 I tie something very similar but do use rabbit. Where you used a dubbing brush I use the zonker strip ripped into a narrow strip half the width of a zonker strip as they are shipped ( mine are packaged zonker strips). I just make the whole fly from the ripped strip and palmer the front about 3 turns or so. My most productive color is purple and the second is black, then white. I found the brush interesting and I might have to try that along the way. It was nice to see the building of the dubbing brush, in many videos they don't go to that length but just say to form one. You do it the same way I do, where some folks use wire instead of thread and also a platform. I just spin mine up from thread as well but I don't have your fancy tool LOL ! Thanks for the video and nice job !

Brian Myers 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2016 Would make a good carp fly.
cheech 0 Report post Posted August 1, 2016 That fly should hunt very well. The only thing that I'd do differently is add more mink in the loop so it makes it all the way to the eye.

TheCream 0 Report post Posted August 3, 2016 Something you should try sometime that works great with zonker type strips in a dubbing loop is to lay a fine flash material on it before sticking it in the loop. Works great with rabbit strip and either Angel Hair or the holographic ice dub colors (silver and gold). It's subtle flash, but when you get it in the water, it gives a really cool "sheen" to the spun material. I usually use a Petitjean style clamp or a bulldog clip for this. Lay the flash loosely on the material, clamp it, trim the excess, stick it in a loop and spin/wrap.
