I like to play around with the colors as well! Thanks chuck but I think maybe the proportions are a bit out

vb1971 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 Size 16 Klinkhammer...... Although my most effective fly, a close up photo shows exactly how sloppy a tier I am!!!! Cheers VB1971
vb1971 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 Hazel's Muddler Playing around with a Deschutes pattern by John Hazel I saw on Speypages. A few materials substituted here (rib/body) but that's what happens when you tie at 5:00 AM and the shops don't open 'till 8. Head's a bit full on this one; may blade it off and try a sparser look. hook - Mustad 9671 #6 thread - UTC 140 burnt orange tail - moose body hair rib - mylar holo copper body - dubbing antique gold wing - grizzly hackle tips collar/head - elk hair (in dubbing loop) Regards, Scott AWESOME TIE
Kimo 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 Size 16 Klinkhammer...... Although my most effective fly, a close up photo shows exactly how sloppy a tier I am!!!! Cheers VB1971 Maybe so, but I happen to think that that "sloppiness" is what makes it so effective. What you call sloppy could also be called "buggy". Great tie. notenuftoys 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 I've always admired buzzer or chironomid patterns, so this afternoon I tried my hand at several. I think they turned out okay.

SBPatt 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 Hirano's Skater (variation) Scaled down version to throw at some stupid cutts. Unfortunately, the river with a decent October Caddis hatch where I wanted to try it currently has Two Type 1 fire crews, five Type 2 crews, 14 engines, three water tenders, three helicopters and an air attack fixed wing airplane assigned to fight a serious fire. Fall can't come soon enough. Here's a nice SBS of the original http://toddhirano.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-summers-hope.html hook - Dai Riki 280 #8 thread - UTC 140 burnt orange tail - moose body hair/orange Krystal Flash tag - mylar holo copper rib - x-small wire copper body - 1mm foam orange thorax - Ice Dub orange (original calls for Cactus chenille) shellback - 2mm foam orange wing/collar - elk hair dyed orange indicators - 2mm foam chartreuse/pink Regards, Scott
thinkingredneck 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 vb1971, I like your Hazel's Muddler. He and Mark Noble of the Greased Line Fly Shop in Vancouver perfected that type of fly . GREAT JOB!
TheCream 0 Report post Posted August 22, 2016 The carp fly I posted earlier tested OK. I was a little bothered that it didn't ride point-up 100% of the time. The fish were not as shallow as they normally are, so I didn't show them the fly much. I did get one take and missed, and my assumption is the point could have been down leading to the miss. To correct it, I tried to keep the weight virtually the same (the fall rate was perfect on the original), but added it differently. Instead of lead wire around the bend of the 20* bent shank hook, I reduced the lead wraps and made up the weight with an 1/8" brass bead Belly Scratcher style. Now, tank testing, she falls point-up every time. I think this fly will be a good add to the carp box, looks deadly in the water. I'm calling it the Drag Queen.
