cicada flies,

Recommended Posts

One day, on an old favorite lake, while fishing I watched a cicada flying across the lake,it hit the water and was immediately gobbled up. This happened several times then I saw a good sized fish jump to grab one in the air.

Is there a foam cicada pattern with a video to tie it?

So basically a slab of foam and six legs . One could get elaborate as they like from there, so as to please the fisherman.

It also looks like you could take the average tied Muddler pattern and add the six legs to it and effectively fish it in that situation and probably catch fish.

Back in MD a few years ago, during one of those 17 year hatches they were all over the place & fish would go crazy for them. Problem was, there was so many of the real thing that getting the fish to hit a fly was tough. I used a black, size 2 or 4 Sneaky Pete type slider with success when the Cicada's were abundant.

Rich, I've heard others say the same as you in the past. I guess it depends on where you are whether or not the fish will be interested in them.

I've gone back to driving a tractor trailer a little over 3 months ago & (Saturday) was passing thru IL on my way back here to SC. I stopped at a rest area and the tree's seemed to be full of Cicada's from the sound. My first thought was wishing I was on a SM bass stream instead of in that truck. sad.png

I honestly don't really care about the 13 or 17 year cicada ... and I doubt the fish do either. They only look a little different than the 2 to 5 year "annual" cicadas that show up every year.

No fish that happened to eat one 13 or 17 years ago is swimming around thinking, "Fish, I can't wait for the next hatch of those cicadas, they are the most delicious cicada in the WORLD !!!"

There are areas that have more annual cicadas than others, and I am sure the fish in these areas are more likely to hit a cicada pattern.

If you hear the buzzing of the annuals, then you're in an area where cicada patterns might be more accepted.

If the 13 or 17 year cicada is the ONLY cicada the local fish see, they probably AREN'T going to jump all over them right away.
