Turkey Streamer Fly - Feathers are from a turkey I shot

Recommended Posts

I shot a turkey this season, and I plucked all the feathers and used them for this fly. Its an awesome little streamer with lots of movement. Great for trout on a stream or river. I used both the tail feathers and two types of marabou from this turkey. The turkey tasted great, and was a hit on Thanksgiving morning.

Hook: Any streamer hook - Im using size 8
Tail and top wing: Turkey marabou, the larger dark feathers
Under wing: Turkey Marabou, the smaller, lighter feathers
Body wrap: Turkey tail feather fibers
Flash: Krystal Flash

I like it. Think it would look awesome with a gold bullethead. Thumbs up for hunting your materials your self.

Thanks! Yeah that gold bullethead would look cool.

I have a few dove in the freezer also, however I haven't done anything with curing them yet. Not sure if I can even use the feathers for anything. However I pulled out the breasts for eating (they were delicious!) But I need to spend the time deboning and putting them on salt or borax..

I like the fly. Should work well.

Now, you killed the turkey to make the fly you cast with the rod you wrapped.

What's next? Making your own lines? :)

McFly, first I want to say what a huge improvement you've made with your videos since you got here! You got off to a rocky start but have seemed to settle in nicely! Thats a nice bird you took there. Personally I think the fly would be that much better with a cone head as said above but nice tie none the less.

One request for us anyway. It would be nice to have a picture posted with your videos so I know what its going to look like as you tie it. But thats a personal preference for myself anyway. Nice job!

Hey thanks man, yeah it was a rocky start. I had a few enemies for sure. Luckily those people have now lightened up and things are better here.

I agree that the cone head would look great.

As for the picture, does the video not show up initially? Like you can't see the pic on there? Granted this video has a pic of my turkey, but usually I make sure it's a picture of the finished fly. In instances like this I will try and remember to put up a pic as well. Otherwise would the picture on the initial part of the video work? Just making sure it's visible, and not just showing a link.

Haha. Yeah I ate the turkey also. Not sure about my own line, but hey maybe... lol. I doubt it though...

Cone head + a deer hair collar to hide the butts of the marabou would look sweet! I think it will fish well with or without our suggestions though. Sweet fly!

We'll see if I read that wrong but I'm thinking he means a head like the one on a Muddler. Small amount of hair trimmed in front but allowed to flair out the back over the rough tie in points.

Since you and others seem to think you always have to go small, than smaller on the San Juan I've fished places like that and caught them on a spinner (Mepps or Rooster Tail), hardly small. I wonder if you couldn't throw the other end of the spectrum and toss an articulated streamer to those fish and break the pattern. Anyone ever try it?

Ah, I get what he means now.

As for the large Streamer yes... they are picky with midge sizes but they do go after large streamers for sure. However they just aren't going after them much right now, since it's the dead of winter. The big ones aren't chasing as much, so you have to like hit them in the nose with it. Haha

But yes, a large articulated Streamer has caught lots of large browns on that river for sure. But these small streamers catch them as well. In the spring or summer I'll make another San Juan video with some streamers and land a few good size for you guys. But in the winter I'm stuck with 28-32 midges... haha. Actually last I went out the water turned a bit cloudy so I could up the midge size and landed a fish finally...

Can you send me an example of a deer hair colar? I'm interested in that

Nothing too large. You can make the collar any size you like. But just do a single spin of deer hair behind the cone head and trim the butts. make sure you stack the tips first as well. I have a video showing how I tied the fly below. This collar maybe a bit large for your fly, but like I said you can adjust the length accordingly. Or keep it the way you tied it. Either way it will catch fish!
