Crappies & Bluegills

Recommended Posts

I seem to have developed and interest in Crappies & Bluegills. Is there anyone here who ties specifically for those fish?

All the time. Most of what I tie is for warmwater species I have close to home, including both of those species. I also fish small streams for bass a lot, and small streamers I use in those situations cross over nicely for crappies. They love small baitfish. In my opinion, you can be as simple or as complex as you want with crappie streamers. A small white bugger will catch them. I don't fish them much because I like other patterns. My favorites for crappies are a small Murdich Minnow (size 6 or smaller), a Kreelex in either silver or copper/gold, and small bead chain Clouser minnows. The reason I like those are they all have slender minnow profiles and all three have different sink rates. Murdich is unweighted, bead chain Clouser is sort of intermediate, and a Kreelex with lead eyes will get down faster. I have shallow, intermediate, and deep situations covered with those 3. But there's a ton of streamer patterns that will catch crappies. Whatever fries your chicken, whatever you have confidence in.

Bluegills will hit just about anything you throw their way, extra emphasis on anything with rubber legs and/or marabou. As far as crappie's go I don't think you can wrong with a pink and white clouser minnow as well as other color combos!

Big crappies in my home lake (PA) are suckers for Chartreuse and White Clousers, size 6 and 4 - like magic!

Bluegills, pretty much anything. Crappie, as I'm sure you know, seem to prefer baitfish flies and they tend to feed looking up so your flies need to be able to suspend in the water and sink slowly. My favorites for crappie are:

Murdich Minnow

Clouser

Wooly Bugger

Stayner Ducktail (my favorite baitfish imitation. Ever)

I tie primarily for warm water since I live in a warm water region. I look forward to spring crappie as much as I look forward to shad, stripers and smallmouth. Bluegills are fun but get annoying at times so I stay away from your trout style flies when crappie fishing. As already mentioned small clousers are all that's really needed since crappie key in on baitfish. Clousers and crappie candies yellow/white, Green/white, white/white rounds it out for me. I don't even think you need the colors as long as you have white.
