SBPatt 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 A friend was kind enough to save me some partial skins from a hunting trip. A bird I have no experience with but it has some really interesting feathers Looking forward to putting this stuff to use. Regards, Scott
shoebop 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 I had to look it up as I had never heard of it. Also know as Montezuma Quail. A handsome bird!
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 Title should be Mearns Quail (stupid auto-correct and stupid me). My aplogies. Regards, Scott
mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 That's a cute Quail. Probably pretty tasty, too. And those feathers ... nothing calls fish in like contrast, and those are the epitome of contrast !!!
DrVette 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 They make GREAT full feathered wings when tying variations of classic salmons. I actually think that there are a couple of classics that call for them???
rockworm 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2017 Although it may not be the showiest use for them I find these feathers make outstanding soft-hackle flies: I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. This is the first time using my iPhone as a camera.
mybadhabit 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2017 That is one gorgeous bird, those feathers are fantastic, nice tyes by the way. Those have great looks on the soft hackles, just what is needed, wonder if you can successfully raise them, because they would be a huge hit in our hobby. millerwb 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2017 Quail feathers do make some GREAT Soft Hackle flies. One of my "go to" feathers when I tie soft hackle.
Wsleeper 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2017 If you can find some of the well marked, long fibered side feathers they make decent Wally wings for smaller flies.
