Barrett's Lucky Strike (Carnage variation) SBS

Recommended Posts

Based on Barrett Christiansen's parachute attractor. With the floating properties of peacock somewhat lacking, I though it could use a little help.

hook - Dai Riki 135 #10

thread - Danville 6/0 black

core - 20lb mono

tail - moose body hair

underbody - 1mm foam brown

body - peacock herl

wing - Congo Hair white

hackle - grizzly (oversize by 1)

put a loop in the end of a piece of mono; tie it in

tie in a loop of CH; trim butts

measure (2x hook length) some moose body; tie in/trim butts

hook loop onto the gallows; wrap hair up the core and back down

image_zpsnndehpc5.jpg

tie in foam strip

image_zpszygafdxg.jpg

brush core with Super Glue

image_zpsc6g4jg6p.jpg

wrap foam up

image_zpsxeanhhoo.jpg

brush on a little more glue, wrap foam down, tie off/trim

image_zpsmwfisysa.jpg

tie in some peacock herl up to base of tail

image_zpsgr2vczxb.jpg

twist peacock with thread, wrap down the underbody; tie off but don't trim peacock

image_zpsdsvpgacu.jpg

release from gallows; trim mono

image_zpsa33rqjcr.jpg

post up CH; tie in hackle (shiny side out)

image_zps6ddngguy.jpg

wrap peacock in front of post; tie off at base of post, trim

image_zpsoe6jmniy.jpg

wrap hackle down post, capture tip with thread wrap around bottom of post

image_zpsyravbybw.jpg

double half-hitch at bottom of post, SHHAN, trim wing

Very nice! That extended body technique is very cool, but seems like kind of a pain also. Looks great though.

Thanks. Not really hard to tie; a couple extra minutes for a fly that floats all day - I'll take that.

Did you buy the 2mm fly foam or just use regular craft foam? I have some craft foam laying around that I might be able to use but I'm not sure its thin enough.

I used 1mm foam here. Regular 2mm craft foam would probably be a bit thick for a fly this size.

Nice, and by twisting the peacock with the thread makes it very durable.

I like peacock as it's a good attractor color. Pheasant tail would also be another good choice.

Is there any alternatives to the moose body hair?

I like fairly stiff fibers for this part of the fly; most deer hair is a bit soft for this application. Some elk hair works pretty well, and bucktail, with fairly straight tips, can be used, too. Just play with what you have and see how it works; for the most part the fish don't really care.

Scott
