wmw4 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2017 Got my materials in so gave it a shot. Tied one in sz 14 and it's a little smaller than what I'm comfortable with but going with the theme of the swap that may be the way to go. May go up to sz 10 if I can't get the quality where I want. It's a neat pattern and I would 100% fish this.
breambuster 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2017 Looks good to me and I would 100% fish it also. Nice work. BB
vicente 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2017 That looks great wmw4.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2017 Funny thing wmw4 is that like most foam flies it doesn't really look like anything but represents everything so will get eaten everywhere. Good work.
Woodenlegs 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2017 My first attempt loos like I've got at least 14 more to go
Woodenlegs 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2017 15 swappers is ok by me and I'm pretty sure I can due July
vicrider 0 Report post Posted May 30, 2017 BB, if all agree to the extra flies and you need one more I'd step in. I'm just setting up to do some extended damsel flies on the needle in vice trick and haven't done them before. I have a setup you use for this with different sized pins and a flap on the back to lock in vice. Had them for awhile and need to learn to use them. I have a beautiful pro tied damsel to copy and if I could get close it would be a killer for big trout or bass. Let me know. That's only if ATX does want out. breambuster 0 Report post Posted May 30, 2017 Ok, everyone. Atxdiscgolfer has withdrawn from the swap, but Vicrider has asked to join. So, hopefully, this is going to be our final roster with Vicrider taking Atxdiscgolfer's place. That means that each swapper will send in 14 flies and you won't get one of your own back. But I'm going to do my very best to make this worthwhile for everyone. I have just about finished by Mr Rapidans but since we have so much time left, there is another pattern that I've been thinking about learning to tie and I have the materials and have made a couple of tries at it. Both of those tries will end up in my fly box since neither is good enough for the swap. But my plan is to submit 2 patterns. The Mr Rapidan and a mystery pattern that you have to be in the swap to find out what it is. The first time I saw it, I said, "I have GOT to learn to tie that one!" It was designed to be a trout pattern, but I've got a feeling that the Bream (bluegills & other related sunfish) are going to LOVE it! And I hope it will make it worth your while to tie up a couple of extra flies for this swap. Take care BB
Dubs 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2017 This is a popular one, do a round 2 swap and I'll try some wally wings
wmw4 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2017 BB is the address the same as last swap? 2 more to go and then I'll have them in the mail. Or if you can come come up with another foam pattern I wouldn't mind doing another set
breambuster 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2017 Wmw4, the address is the same. I haven't gone anywhere. :-), But if you are interested in another pattern, here is a foam ant, or here is a foam beetle, or a foam humpy, and here is a beautiful foam cricket. Take your pick. I've been thinking about tying a brown cricket pattern because the bluegills seem to prefer the brown crickets to the black ones. Take care BB
DManley 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2017 I am making progress on the Red Fox Squirrel Nymphs. They will be in Size 12, but the hooks are Daiichi, not Tiemco. (10 and 12 were out of stock) I am using Hungarian Partridge and I am getting the hang of making it look like a stonefly nymph instead of a hook that was used to pick out the corners of the lint filter in the dryer. It's a bit of a trick to make the silhouette of the thorax look right. (I am used to wets and drys where there is usually one smooth body profile from the tail to the wing.) I always use lead free wire for swaps, as I know some guys out there are fishing lead free waters. I will get some pictures up in the next few days. I hope everybody else is having fun too! vicrider 0 Report post Posted June 17, 2017 I am thinking serious about ordering a dozen (14) flies and having them drop shipped to your addy. I just can't get the handle on what I want to tie. You just might end up with 14 different flies, each being one of the experiments along the way. Whoever is lucky enough to get the last one might have something worthy of their flybox, whoever gets these first ones might sneak them out just to fish at dusk when no one can see what he has on. I have no doubt they will all catch fish, some have for me, but as for being in the bin at the fly shop...well...not gonna happen.

The whole idea of this swap was to challenge ourselves, not create "perfect" examples. So buck up buddy, we are always our own worst critics. I am still struggling with my fan wings, but even if they wind up more like spinners than dry flies, I am sticking with it.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted June 18, 2017 I should have pretended my big trouble was fanwings. I find fanwings within my tying ability IF IF you can sort out enough good feathers. The feather is the whole trick. Some time ago I was sorting through a bunch of feathers and happened to run into these two stuck together. Only ones with a dot in the whole bag of Mallard flank feathers. I did this with them.
