red thread...is it just me?

Recommended Posts

This is so weird, but I have trouble with red or orange thread breaking when I tie with it. It started with uni-thread 8/0 in orange. I use 8/0 uni in lots of colors, so I just blamed it on a bad spool. I bought another, and it still broke when I pulled just a bit like when I snug down some deer hair. Then I tried Danville 6/0 in red and it also broke. I thought I solved the problem when I started using UTC 70. I tied a some salmonfly dries with it earlier this spring with no problems. Today I'm tying chironomids with red accents, not even pulling hard, and it starts happening again. After I pulled a few feet of thread off the spool it's working fine again, but I was swearing pretty bad and almost tossed the spool.

I've never had this problem with any other color or thread type. Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you using all of these threads on the same bobbin? If so, you may have a burr on the bobbin that is catching the thread and causing it to break.

I don't know if your spinning deer hair or just tying down deer hair.for spinning deer hair I use gsp75 thread,or for just tying in deer hair I will use utc270 thread.

I think today's breakage was the fault of the bobbin. I later used olive 8/0 uni on that bobbin and it broke too, so it probably has a burr. I'll have to check and probably replace it if that's the case. In the past it definitely wasn't a bobbin issue because it happened with more than one bobbin and didn't happen with other colors. It's still kinda weird, especially since it's happened over the course of a couple years and it's always red or orange thread.

Funny but I've had that same thing with red in Veesus 16/0. I use it one some tiny flies and the other colors are stronger than you'd think but the red breaks easily in comparison. No problem with orange, just the red, and have that with some other red threads but never really thought about it. Not just bobbin problems either because I've use different bobbins.

Has this issue once ? Looked at Bobbin , and I must of nicked the tip of it where thread feeds out ? Just a tiny little nick , dremal tool to the rescue , all ok now , I guess I just caught the barb or hook tip just enough to create the " burr ". All is good now. .....love my Rite Bobbins

Not just you. I have had issues with thread breakage of red and fl. orange...just those two colors so I know it isn't my bobbin. I have to be more delicate with them so I don't do any deer hair spinning with either of those colors.

So maybe something in the dying process of red weakens some mfg'ers threads? I do know in the Veesus line, which is by far my preferred threads, the other colors have like a sheen or smooth look about them while the red looks flat and dull.
