ben bell 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2017 i wouldn,t pay $300 for a rod either but i can afford to make one for $50 and it,s a quality blank that weighs only two ounces and 12' long..all i had to do was slide on an EVA grip and plug the back end..they even sell kits for $75 with nicer grips and hardware..it,s just for farmpond fishing and excels at that. JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2017 One of my (previously) favorite ways of fishing, when I first got to Florida, was to scull my boat along a weed line with a cane pole in the other hand. I use an 18 foot fiberglass rod from Walmart, with 4 feet of 20 pound braid and a lead head jig. I would slowly move along the weed line, the the pole extended out in front of the boat, the jig swimming a foot or so under the surface. Many times, I would get a strike and a hook set, but the fish would swim directly away from me and snap the braid. It's a very exciting way to fish. If you have time to react, you can probably keep up with or turn the head of most fish you hook ... but not if it takes the fly and immediately runs straight away from you. when I win the powerball, there will be no tenkara rods allowed on my C-130. Very few rules for us, but that will be one. Bring good rum, but no tenkara rods.

RickZieger 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2017 Why is tenkara getting bashed when folks use graphite, boron, fiberglass and bamboo rods? If you are happy with the way your are fishing go for it. I define what is fly fishing for myself, except when the game officer shows up. He said then Tenkara rod was fly fishing. Rick
ben bell 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2017 hi rick..looks like if it doesn,t have a reel it must not be fly fishing although people have been fly fishing for over 1000 years before the reel was invented..how soon we forget. lol.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2017 It's all good natured fun Rick. I consider myself an angler and enjoy many varied angling opportunities from fly fishing to spin fishing, bait fishing, chunking catfish and stripers and ice fishing. In spring and fall I fish for trout, shad and stripers, stripers in the river, stripers in the salt and stripers off the beach. Summer time I fish for smallmouth and pannies. Early spring and late fall I'm a walleye fisherman and in the winter I bore little holes in ice and perch and crappie fish. In the army I did a lot of tenkara fishing with a PRC77 whip antenna. I just called it fishing with a PRC77 whip antenna back then. On my boat I typically take 3 spinning rods and a fly rod and fish whichever is outfishing the other. When wading it's all fly rod with a spinning rod in the truck. With that said I personally would never fish with a tenkara rod but don't really care what the next guy is doing. I did get a good chuckle at the one guy I ever saw fishing with a tenkara rod. I couldn't run away from the guy fast enough when he felt the need to educate me on tenkara and proceed to show me all 300 flies he was carrying as well as his furled leaders that were custom made by some guy in Utah. mikechell 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2017 Why is tenkara getting bashed As usual, the people who like something don't actually listen to the critics. No one ... I repeat, NO ONE ... has bashed the fishing style, using a "cane" pole. Almost every kid started with a cane pole, which is all tenkara fishing is. It's the fancy name and the "fancy" price that goes with the name ... that's what the critics are bashing.

Wait a minute, I started fishing with a young spring sapling branch, twine for a line ,bent common pin for a hook and a worm. I was 6.

And there were no sand beaches ... since the rocks hadn't been ground that fine, yet.
