Ordering Tying Materials

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I am relatively new to tying and needing to order several materials for fall patterns. Do y'all recommend a specific website or company to order from for a good deal or free shipping?

Thanks

In order to better help please list type flies and fish you are targeting.

Rainbow and Brown Trout

Mostly nymphs (bead head hare's ear, pheasant tail) and caddis emergers

I'm wiped clean of most of my materials and need to order almost everything for all the patterns. (I use a lot of the "tightline" videos of YouTube.)

Thanks a lot!

Little River Outfitters. Free shipping. Their fly tying materials are not online, so you have to call. I've always been satisfied with Hook and Hackle also.

A local fly shop would appreciate your business and have a lot of the materials you may need in the future

That is my go-to, but the local shop closes before I get off work!

Thanks for all the suggestions, though!

Not only will you be supporting a local business (which pays taxes in your locality and employs local people) but you will be helping keep a brick and mortar store in business. If. Your only choice is online shopping, you immediatly lose the ability to pick your materials first hand.

I have relationships with fly shop owners who will reserve materials for me or choose them and send them to me (allowing me to return anything not to my liking).

In these days of supercompetitive retail, build a trusting relationship with the owner of your local shop - explain what you are looking for and I think you will be more than surprised what accomodations the local merchant will make for you.

BPS and Cabelas both started in somebodies back corner and eventually as brick and mortar mom and pop shops from nothing but the humble American dream of small hard working regular people. Now they are a multimillion dollar mega store employing thousands of people directly and thousands others indirectly, donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to environmental issues and vastly enriching the communities they open in. I'd say that's worth supporting.

My closest fly shop is about a 45 minute drive and they also sell online. As I always say, a global market place is the best thing ever for consumers and your internet shopping is most likely supporting somebodies local mom and pop shop somewhere. I do like to browse the fly shop but it seems I only ever pick up a few dickie doo things that I wasn't looking for because of limited selection. By all means support local but i generally go to cabelas in Hamburg pa because they have the best selection of any place within two hours of me and I like to see, feel, and fondle material when I can.
