Tear Mender consistency?

Recommended Posts

I have seen it used in many videos, and I guess it is very fluid, because it seems to soak in right away, but I cant really appreciate it. I already have another fabric glue that is pretty thick and takes a long while to dry, so I am trying to see if there is any advantage.

What can you tell me?

It soaks in well for baitfish heads. It doesn't exactly dry clear but mostly translucent (i.e. looks fine on baitfish heads). Gunnar Brammer has pretty good video on making heads with TearMender.

It works, but I got frustrated with the stuff because I'd not use it for a while and I'd get a big glob of it dried in the cap/applicator. It got to the point where it wasn't worth the hassle to me so I stopped using it.

Thanks for the answers.

I am looking to use it in baitfish heads a la Gunnar Brammer. He is one of the ones I have seen online.

Fly-rite leaves for me a brown stain when it dries. Admittedly, it well may be that mine is vintage and the applicator needle may be giving out some rust by now. I don’t mind that on a whip finish, but I do on a white dubbing belly. #firstworldproblems, I know...

Not crazy about TM drying out, because I don’t tie that much, that often either. The stuff is not cheap.

Might just put a small bottle it in my Christmas list, but in the bottom half... :)

I think you ought to check out the Bob Popovic style of silicone flies using clear silicone caulk for the fly heads. Now he uses a light cured flexible resin fro his Flex Fleye patterns..

Thanks Silver Creek.

I hated silicone when I first tried. Did not like the mess of epoxy too much either, so I never really followed Popovics.

But I can see how all these glues we have now make it worth revisiting.

I've used Popvics Siliclone with great success, particularly as a finger mullet pattern. The one problem with silicone is that it's sticky. What Bob Pop recommended years ago was to use Photo-Flo to smooth it out. It use to be available in a good camera store, but with the rise of digital cameras it may no longer be available. Looks like the flex fleye is an updated version of his Surf Candy.
