Bimini15 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2017 I have always wondered what a fly like this is really trying to imitate. The coloration is like nothing that would swim in a river. Once I read in passing about possibly imitating butterflies, but is it true?
hankinsfly 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2017 Imitating nothing- atlantics bite out of reaction (says the Okie)
mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2017 I once wondered the same thing, Bimini. I still don't "get it" ... but I do appreciate the time invested in tying each one. One of the most inclusive write ups I've seen on the Classic Salmon Fly. http://www.thefield.co.uk/fishing/classic-salmon-fly-the-art-and-the-history-27937
eide 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2017 So, as mentioned, a lot of this is about triggering a response if you get close ( a lot of salmon fishing is about that, and then it is not neccesary to have a close imitation) They might not make sense all the time when it comes to imitation, but: look at the darker roof and lighter belly on a lot of these. The JC "eye" and movement of a spey fly - this makes sense when it comes to trigger response from salmon.
