January Flies from the Vise

Recommended Posts

Caught maybe my biggest trout ever last year on one of those, gp, and I was only using it as an indicator for a small nymph I wanted to scootch down in a pocket around a big boulder. The thing swooped up, rolled over, and gave me a nice surprise. Unfortunately I was using 6x and couldn't land him. Nice tie, brings back a nice memory

TheCream, Looks like a killer pattern. Outstanding photo which helps define fly's size and color.

Did you flatten the body on these flies?

I don't flatten them. The fly is extremely simple, and based almost entirely off the "Olivia Midge" tied by the South Holston Fly Shop. I added the strand of flash in the tail, that's my only modification. Here's the recipe I followed:

Hook: DaiRiki 125 size 20

Bead: 1/16" black brass

Tail: single strand of olive Krystal Flash

Rib: small size olive Ultra Wire

Body: brown 8/0 thread

Cream - curious, how are you fishing these chironomids if you don't mind? Stillwater? Indicator? 6x+? one fly? xtra long leader? Thanks for sharing your magic.
