Mike West 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 Philly, Is that a foam head on the Pig Boat? Looks good
Philly 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 Thanks Mike. It's white thread wrapped over the front part of a spinner bait skirt coated with UV resin. I've got some small popper heads might be worth a try using one for the head. Might give the fly a bit of neutral balance.
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 Ausable Stonefly (variation) Playing around with Fran Betters' take on the Stimi. The wing calls for everything from woodchuck to coastal deer hair; used some bleached moose body I picked up at Blue Ribbon last fall. Also, I dialed back the bulk and length of the wing & tail from the original; personal preference. hook - Dai Riki 730 #10 thread - MFC 6/0 hot orange tail - bleached moose body rib - x-small wire gold body - dubbing amber/orange mix body hackle - brown wing - bleached moose body hackle - brown Regards, Scott

David Parker 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 Here`s a pattern that I salvaged from an old outdoors magazine before the internet arrived, but never followed up to tie until now. It was featured as Fly of The Month when I found it in the mag. Super easy to tie and play with. The original pattern called for either cork or balsa wood for the body, I`ve chosen to use a hard foam Bass Popper body. Don`t know if this came before the Sneaky Pete or after. Yellow Slider on TMC 8089 size 2. Great patterns so far this month everyone!
utyer 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 I have been tying big salt water flies for so long, now when I need to refill some trout fly boxes, I need to start big and work my way down. A few Hexagenia patterns. and articulated nymphs. All between 20 and 35 mm.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 14, 2018 Now ... that's just weird. It's a great tie, as usual for you ... but I am not used to seeing counter-wrapped hackle ... and it looks ... weird.

Mike, I always counterwrap the body hackle on Stimulators; having it come apart after a fish or two convinced me a bit of protection was needed. mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2018 As I said, it's a great looking fly. You're always posting perfect examples. Maybe I just haven't noticed, or it's particularly noticeable on this one. As a technician, I look at a reverse thread fastener and can see it right away. It looks odd because the mind expects a right hand thread. Same thing here. My mind is telling me it's a mirror image, but I know it's not.
fishinguy 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2018 Counter wrapping hackle is common an any fly using the wire rib. The hackle isn't or doesn't need to be tied in by the thread. The wire is what's holding it in place. Common in wooly buggers too.
