soft hackle

Recommended Posts

I really can't narrow it down. I guess it depends on the pattern I'm tying. If it's a Red Ass or one of the Partridge ane... patterns, obviously I like a partridge hackle. For spiders or flymphs, I use the Conranch JV hen. Other than that, I guess I try to match the pattern recipe as close as possible. I'm a big help, huh? dunno.gif

Partridge, absolutely !

And depending where you are you don't have to buy it, there's lots of guys who hunt the (not very wily) critter, and are happy to share the feathers.

Cheers....Fred

I like Partridge because I've always had a thing for Susan Dey smile.gif

heh heh - me too. I am tempted (back to soft-hackle flies) to pick up some starling as that is highly recommended in some books, and try a few with that. Anyone used it??

I have some starling. Small feathers good for small flies. Why buy starling though, around here, at this time of year I can see 20 or 30 in the yard feeding. They are easy pickings with a pellet gun and the city wants you to shoot them, grackle too (something about West Nile). The grackle have larger feathers and if you peg a male, they have a blue iridecense (sp?) to them.

That said, I also like Quail a lot! I have a bunch and it works great for soft hackle flies.
