maddog48 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 I've tied at a few smaller... other than Sow Bug which is getting HUGE... shows and I have been amazed to watch a gentleman weave size 32's. Unbelievable stuff, but fun to watch... since I'm not the one doing it. Mike
hunthicks 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 I've done some size 26 and 28 midges of various design, but try to stick above size 20 these days. It just takes lots of patience and a steady hand helps, and luckily I was born without my father's cigar like fingers!

Mato Kuwapi 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2005 I've tied a couple 32's just to see if I could do it. They turned out not too shabby. It makes a good conversation piece and it's fun to demo at a show. The REAL problem is I can't get them on a tippet to fish them. I can fish them down to a 22, then I give up.
Aerie 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 Holy Smokes ! Having spent last night grumbling and cursing about size 22 Blue Winged Olives, I am blown away! Size 32!! That I WOULD like to see... Gotta have way steadier hands, and better eyes, than me!
conehead 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 Aerie, Welcome to the forum, I know I should have posted this on another thread, but welcome anyway (do something about that bait fisherman) Ha Ha. Actually the smaller you go the easier and faster it is. I use a 2 1/2 x magnifying lens and light. 1. 4 turns of thread, add fibers for a tail 2. A thread body with a hi-vis post 3. Then tie in the butt end of a #32 hackle 4. Two circles around the post, whip finish and your done I use a lot of 22-32 midges here in south-central PA, and found that after you get the hang of it, you tie them faster and with less cost (less material) than any other fly. For #24-32, I use a 8x tippet, no problem. Hint: If your eyes are old and weak, tie the tippet on the fly at the bench Conehead Just can't seem to find cones to fit those #32s
Aerie 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 Well, thank you, on both counts! My wife, who is not only a pretty decent fisher, and patient, considerate lady, said exactly that last night - She was beading and I was tying, and she allowed that we both could probably use decent magnification - so far, I just use my reading glasses, but that would help! Aerie 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 Oops - Should have asked - what style of magnifier do you use, and where does one find them? Eben
conehead 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 I picked up a heap one at office max. I paid $14 three years ago. I htink they are still under $20. the lens and light are in the same housing (incandesent bulb), the lens has a flip up cover to keep it clean. Screwed the mounting bracket to the bench, also comes with a c-clamp. works well, I give it an 8 out of 10; But if I could do it over, I think would try something else. Conehead PS: The guys on this board will chip in and buy you a magnifying light, if your wife could convince our wives to become flytying assistants. Ha Ha. Sounds like she's a keeper. My wife's a keeper too, but not into fishing.
Aerie 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 I'll check that out, thanks! She hunts, too - and cleans her own birds! But most imortantly, she lets me borrow her Sage 4 weight! Eben

Robert_S 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2005 This is a 28 and an old blind eye 32, the new temco 32 are a lot larger hook gap, I heard they are supposed to start making the old 32s again cost about $100 a box. http://www.flytyingforum.com/uploads/galle...2bd07f3e204.jpg
