David Parker 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2018 This item was given to me many years ago. This retired fly fisherman/tier used it as a material fence, for holding back materials on the hook shank of some of the flies he tied. I was told it is made from an old metal coat hanger. I've never used it, but thought it was rather a unique show of someone's resourcefulness when it comes to making the task of tying a little easier. tjm 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2018 Much prettier than the ashtray I use to use for that purpose. I found a magnetic parts bowl at Harbor Freight that holds flies now, with no bounce out or tip overs.Great job on the finishing.
DFoster 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2019 A few years ago I made my own profile plate. While it does not attach to the vise, it can be raised or placed where ever needed. 1) Mechanics extendable mirror- I got one at the dollar store for a buck 2) 1.75" Rubber stopper- This came from ACE hardware and was around $2. 3) Velcro. 4) 1/8" Thick piece of wood- I used the lid of a wood cigar box. Available at any tobacconist for about a buck. 5) A sheet of colored craft paper. All I did was drill a hole in the rubber stopper and insert the mirror. Place Velcro on the back side of the mirror. Cut the cigar box wood to the size I wanted and glued on the craft paper. Simple and it works.
flytire 0 Report post Posted January 4, 2019 there are many ways to fold a hackle. this is just another way to do it. no one way is better than another and none of them are wrong a piece of high density foam make a simple hackle folding tool slice the foam with a utility knife and insert the hackle to fold the fibers. make multiple slices for folding multiple hackles helpful for tyers who use folded hackle in their flies. not so helpful for the tyers who dont not actually "homemade" but a typists document holder and a piece of scrapbooking paper makes an excellent fly tying profile plate and photography background
