Sandan 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2018 Norm, Love your flies and posts. Could you please show a grouse feather for the Breadcrust as it's ready to tie in. Thanks, Bob H Here you go http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/details.cfm?parentID=86 Charlie says to soak the grouse tail for about an hour. That pith is real pith in the butt to strip out. How long did you soak your feathers?

Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2018 Geash, you guys. You make me want to just blow off the rest of the day and lock myself in the tying room. That would make my wife very angry, she's the production warden around here.

I had bought a bunch of Koolaid for dyeing feathers but was concerned with color-fastness in water.
notenuftoys 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2018 I prefer to collar my wooly buggers rather than wrap hackle up the body. Maybe it's lazy, I'm not sure. But I think done right it pushes more water and using the right feathers provides enticing movement. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. ;-) Anyway, I picked up some grizzly collaring hackle from Nature's Spirit and created a Collared Seal. A simple bugger with simi seal body and a collar of grizzly hackle.
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2018 Very cool Scott, would you use Koolaid for fishing flies as well as display flies? I had bought a bunch of Koolaid for dyeing feathers but was concerned with color-fastness in water. Mark, I fish all the flies I tie, these included. Haven’t had any problems with color fade in fresh water; can’t say how well it works in salt. Here’s a link to a Koolaid dyeing SBS I did a while back https://www.washingtonflyfishing.com/forum/index.php?threads/106691/ Hope it helps.
