wr1nkles 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2018 Why would someone build a fly like this? With so much bare shank. Benefits?
mikechell 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2018 Lots of fish out there with teeth that cut through leader/tippet material. If you don't want to tie on a length of wire, you can tie flies like those in the attempt to keep the teeth away from your line.
sandflyx 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2018 also a good imitation of a bally-hoo. a musky fly

Thanks mikechell!
MuskyFlyGuy 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2018 Sandflyx, I really like those flies and the concept. Any tying recommendations you can make as I try to tie from the picture? Thanks Tom
notenuftoys 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2018 I mentioned it before, but this Coq de Leon saddle with Chickabou is quickly becoming my favorite for buggers. I ordered one on a whim, but now I'm gonna buy different colors. I decided the saddle feather was probably long enough to wrap up the shank, so I did a quick test in a pot of water. The movement of the hackle was impressive! Anyway, here's the one color I have, with other colors to come in the near future.
notenuftoys 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2018 Ever been sitting around and all of a sudden an idea for a fly pops in your head? No? Seek counseling? It's a mental illness? Yea, all probably right. Anyway, the idea was to make something leggy and jiggy. (This fly needs a porn name.) So I tied on some rubber legs, Krystal flash and rabbit hair in a dubbing loop. And it turned out like this.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2018 Arndilly Fancy Flytire, I have tried to get the red band head on streamers like ? (Mary Dette) . One of the famous women tyers anyway. Every time I try to put anything on the head the red just fades into the black. I've tried CA, Rumpf, and UV, which makes the nicest looking heads but have same problem with losing the distinct red band to the background. What's your secret? Here's a couple of simple ties for another swap with soft hackles as the theme. First silver wire tag, purple Gossamer Silk body, purple UV enhanced herl thorax, and Hungarian Partridge hackle on a 14 hook. And since soft hackles fall off the vise so rapidly I'm including an size 18 CDC no hackle emerger.
flytire 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2018 the red band is a carrie stevens trademark not mary dette the original recipe above called for "Head color - 2 turns of red ostrich herl or a band of red lacquer around the base of the head, with the remainder black" (i used fluorescent red thread) if i remember correctly, i put on a light coat of thinned head cement on the black head. let dry. then i attached danvilles fluorescent red thread (it kinda looks bright pink) with a few wraps and the spun the thread counterclockwise to flatten it to a ribbon and wrapped a few more turns to get the solid color and so the black wouldnt bleed through the red. i didnt want to muck up the red thread wraps with an ill place whip finish, so i applied a swipe of crazy glue to the thread and made my final wraps or red thread. i let dry and then cut off the red thread then i applied a coat of uv resin to the entire head. solarez bone dry is a very thin uv resin and will penetrate the thread like a thinned head cement would. i used silver creeks uv resin. its rather thick and doesnt penetrate as much a little time consuming for other tyers but i got the results i was shooting for and for what the recipe called for
