Is there any recommendations for the hackle - to buy a whole Cape is sooooo expensive when you are only tying a few flies up.

The hackle on a Klinkhamer doesn't need to be super high quality. However, super high quality can be cheaper than, say, Indian capes! Sounds wrong but you can get more flies out of a Whitings 100 pack than you can from an Indian cape.

Knowing what size and how many Klinkhamers you want to tie would help us help you. Also what colour of hackle do you want? The original called for pale blue dun.

I would go this route. You get a bunch of good saddle hackle in a variety of colors for $9.99 and free shipping. If you're tying larger sized Klinks, I would contact him and ask if he had any available that would tie in a slightly larger size range. Even if you're only going to tie a few Klinkhammers to try out, you'll still have a bunch of perfectly suitable saddle hackle in different colors for all types of other patterns. He's been in that business for years, so he knows what he's doing. You can go other routes, but they will all add up to probably quite a bit more by the time that it's all said and done.

but you will be able to use the remaining feathers on other dry flies

 

dont overlook whiting farms bronze or pro grade full or half capes
