mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 This is one of those topics that is 100% theoretical. No one will change their minds, no matter how convincing the opposing arguments are. We rationalize what we want to believe. I believe there's far more scientific and circumstantial evidence behind my rationalizations than there is behind other options. As a die hard science fiction reader, I would LOVE to believe Extraterrestrials have been here, are here or will show up before I die. As an equally die hard science reader ... I realize it's just not realistic. (BTW ... I use "reader" instead of "fan". I don't own a single action figure, have never been to a comic book store, etc.)
tjm 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 Highly improbable. If there was NO intelligent life at the time ... they would've colonized the planet. What if? They found us to be not "intelligent life" and found this planet unattractive. The corollary of the ant hill that I poked and then left behind. We don't know what we don't know. But I had an ant farm when I was a kid and ants have the same kind of drive to build that we do. We may be some one else ant farm.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 The truth is out there. Having seen a UFO that defied explanation I'm a believer. 4 of us saw it long enough to talk about it, describe it to each other so we were seeing the same thing, and wishing one of us had a camera around. There was more involved with this "sighting" that I won't go into but put me as 3 friends down as someone seeing something not explainable 45 years ago and not explainable now either. The 2 things you first list Mike take me to the first rule of science according to Nick. There are no absolutes. Today we are going with the theory nothing with mass can exceed the speed of light. Tomorrow we have planes that do it regularly on transoceanic flights. If you read a lot of sci-fi there are numerous ways to bypass the time it takes to travel light years and warp that time down to very finite time periods. I believe alien visitors have been here and will be again. I also think contact with life from other planets would throw so many waves rippling through our self centered society it might be best to not have that contact, though I for one dream of it happening. DCGallim 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 Mike, I have no idea of what is true or real, I like exploring theories and thinking about them though You are assuming that mining means the same thing to us as it did to them, maybe I should use a different word but point being we are a "tool" species left behind. We don't know what the earth was like a long, long, long time ago, even though we theorize it's still theories. Therefore we cannot comprehend what might have existed, especially if it's not within the scope of our understanding. What if fossil fuels we mine today are leftover byproducts of what was taken. What if mining was simply removing what was on earth's surface at that time, or on a larger scale what if by mining ETs were able to move tectonic plates and capture the energy (maybe that's why Pangea become and is not more!). We tend to think in terms of what we know, but if we take all of that away, then the possibilities become endless (I don't mean we take away all the logic, lol!). There are so many things we do not know exist let alone understand, then there are many many things we think exists but do not understand (dark energy / black matter / etc. as examples), that it's completely possible. Im sorry we as a human race arent that smart without help. Im sorry Fox News doesnt have an alien for you on the evening news. 😉

Mike West 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 There is also a reason they put Flouride in our water and toothpaste with no scientific proof it prevents cavities. At one time it was the #1 ingredient in rat poison. Hitler used it right before he rounded up the Jews. Makes you passive. Opsss Im sorry did I get off topic? 😉

mikechell 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2019 Okay ... as Steve pointed out ... the topic strays because some people take another person's opinion as some kind of personal attack. As I stated above, I truly wish/hope/want to believe UFOs and ETs are real. But I just can't. I want to believe that FTL is possible. Or that some kind of method for circumventing of the distances of space is possible. But I can't. I'm not saying they AREN'T ... just that I won't believe they are real until I see absolute proof. dadofmolly 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2019 It's all fascinating. Amazes me people make a lot of money on books and TV shows giving hypothesise that cannot be proven or really challenged. This is one of those topics that is based entirely on opinions. It cannot be proven either way, only justified by an opinion: both for and against. Reminds me of the old story of a professor that unless he can see it, taste it or touch it then it does not exist; countered by a student who disagreed with him but made the argument that since he (student) could not see, touch or taste the professor's brain then the professor must not have a brain.
