Weed Seed

 

Hook - Dry fly style Size: 8-14

Thread - Tan

Tail - Pearl Krystal Flash, 2 strands, tied long

Body - Deer hair, extended beyond the bend of the hook, flared at the rear

Ribbing - Crisscrossed threads

Wing - Deer hair, spread down and across the back

Tying Tips: Simple and quick to tie. Represents a variety of insects so it can virtually

be tied in any size. Also tied in gray and purple.

Fishing Tips: It floats well and is a good searching pattern, especially on new waters.

A very productive pattern.

Historical Note: This fly was created sometime between 2005-2009 by Mike Schultz.

Mike is the owner and head guide of Schultz Outfitters in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Doobry Muddled Crippler

 

 

 

 

A day (actually 3) late and dollar short for Halloween; using Rob Denson's wet as the framework.

tag - tinsel gold

tail - bleached pheasant tail dyed orange (1 Tbs Rit Sunshine Orange/1 cup water)

rib - small wire gold

body - tinsel gold

body hackle - orange/black

1st shoulder - pheasant rump dyed black

collar - chukar dyed orange (1 Tbs Rit Sunshine Orange/1 cup water)

head - deer hair dyed black

Tying Tips: Easy to tie, using the standard techniques.

Fishing Tips: General purpose fly. Use larger sizes early in the summer and the smaller

sizes in the fall when the blue-wing olives are out.

Historical Note: Boyd Senter (1898-1982) was a professional musician having played with

Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Freddie Fisher. He played over 33 different

instruments. He retired to Mio, Michigan where he divided his time between

repairing high school band instruments and running a sporting goods shop,

where he tied and sold his own flies. He established himself as an accomplished

fly tied and fisherman. In 1959 he designed 4 flies honoring different models of

Fords: the Falcon, Fairlane, Galaxie and the Thunderbird

Catau's Michigan Hopper

 

Hook - Mustad #R74-9672 4XL Size: 6-12

Thread - Black or Yellow

Tail - Red duck quill, calftail, yarn or floss, trimmed short.

Body - Medium Yarn, yellow, green or brown.

Ribbing - Brown, palmered.

Wing - Deer Hair, tied trude over the body.

Head - Trimmed butts from the wing, caddis style.

Tying Tips: Standard techniques. Substitute the body with a poly yarn. There is also a variation of this which has legs.

Fishing Tips: Any time the hoppers are on the water. Body color and hook size by the hoppers in your area.

Historical Note: This fly was developed by Dan Catau back in the 1980s. Dan was an established tyer back in the 70s through the 90s. He tied professionally for Skip’s Sport Shop in Grayling, MI. and later for Hank’s Fly Shop in Lake Orion, MI. He no longer ties but is enjoying his retirement in Washington, MI. He wrote a book on Michigan Hex fishing entitled, “In the thrill of the Night.”

We have a family cabin, 10 miles from his old shop. Spent much time with him! He was in his 80s and had every you could imagine in that shop. He invented one of the first rotary vices, wish I had a pic. This was the first pattern he introduced to me.

Michigan Moth

Hook - Mustad #R50-94833 Size: 8-10

Thread - Pale yellow

Body - Natural White Peacock Herl (isubstituted white yarn)

Wing: Natural Deer Hair, divided and pulled down to the sides of the fly

Tying Tips: You can use any dry fly hook and if you prefer you can substitute the deer hair light elk hair. Begin tying as if you were doing a caddis fly; once your hair is tied in simply divide the hair and pull it down toward the sides of the fly. Then, using your thread firmly secure the wings.

Fishing Tips: This fly is designed as a generalized moth pattern. Here in Michigan we have many species that we commonly call grass moths, lawn moths or just plane common brown moths. They are usually out April through September. They are attracted to light. When night fishing a river where the banks are lined with cabins the moths will often be found crossing the river, drawn by the lights of the cabins. That’s the most productive scenario for the use of this fly. I suspect that it might also be used on spruce moths.

I fished with a friend who used a fly just like the Teacher years ago. He called it an Uncle Ed as his uncle tied it and it was the only fly Ed used. I was using a humpy same size and he out fished me two to one. Simple effective pattern. Flytire, thanks for giving my old brain a jump start to take me back to a fond old memory.
