March Flies From the Vise

Recommended Posts

A few I twisted up in the last day or so. Of course I tied more than one each.

Glad y'all followed flytires’words of wisdom,  pages 5 and 6 are amazing,  Chug and Sandan, will be needing your advice for our planned summer trip to Island Park,  Idaho, likely postponed for a year until June 2021...  Now, back to the bench

Tying for the classic dry fly swap. I chose to do Royal Coachmen because it was a fly that I needed to work on so here are some of them.

After three or four practice flies I was getting it down. I figured I was ready to start tying for the swap but I was still having trouble getting the wings to do what I wanted them to do.

This is the eighth or ninth fly I tied but I still couldn't get the wing feather to act right.

DSCF4879-XL.jpg

I switched wing feathers and finally got one that acted right. Sometimes it is the feather and not the tier (Most of the time it's the tier and not the feather with me). Feather selection is getting more and more important for me as I go along. Generally, I hate to waste anything so I would use every feather, but now, my time and the appearance of the fly are becoming more important to me than wasting a feather.

This is the second one I tied with that feather. Only 10 more to go. It's going to be a challenge to get 24 of those wings right. It's fine to be able to tie a decent looking fly but getting 12 of them right and looking exactly the same is another story all together. There's nothing like a swap to get you tuned up on a fly.

Whenever I think I'm getting good at something, someone else will post something that will make mine look pretty bad, so let's have them. I'd like to see some more Royal Coachmen.

I tied 23 Royal Coachmen total for the classic dry fly swap.

Here's the best twelve for the swap.

This one may be my best, even though the floss is a little fuzzy.

The fuzz is bugging me now.

Ready for shipping on Monday.

I'm sure everybody's tired of my Coachmen. I'm going back to Orvis index to do the steelhead flies next.

Not much tying getting done lately but I worked on some dries for the classic dry swap. March brown didn’t make the cut; the Dette’s coffin fly just barely did.

The Buford is practice for a tiger Muskie trip I’m hoping to make this May, if the zombie hordes don’t descend on us before then. Gotta make some more.

Lots of good stuff this month (as usual), everybody! Those au sable flies are killer, SB, and nice job on the royal coachmen, Mark.
