Flat Rock native 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2020 Thanks flat! So I think what I have is hurl, and they are fairly uniform. Slight taper going up to the tip. Problem is I don’t live near a fly shop that would carry these things so I cannot just pick through and find the bushiest hurl. Haha! I’ll look for Yellowstone fly company hurl. Maybe theirs is bushier. Mine is hareline I believe. Go with plumes... My YFly Company herl has short fibers
Flat Rock native 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2020 A plume is the entire feather A herl is one individual frond off of the plumehttps://www.feather-craft.com/large-ostrich-plumes www.world-ostrich.org has above diagram, nothing is labeled “frond.” All my packages of herl contain about the top third of a plume. The bottom third of a plume is the stuff OP is seeking. You get the herl too with a plume.

Abel M. 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2020 It might help! Tightlinevideos on youtube has a short video on how to place the herl on right were the fibers stick strait out when you wrap it on the hook shank. It helped me out a lot n my flies look more uniform. That one looks great for a size 20.

Especially after seeing the one flytier has. Thanks man, glad you like what I tied. Yeah I really like the look of these, just want them too look like that but larger. Haha! McFlyLures 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2020 I didn't even know there was a contest. Missed it again. Honestly I dont even know anymore. I post questions and it seems like people just read into me being upset somehow. Many years ago I admit I was a bit touchy and seemed to argue a lot. But Ive changed. I understand though I guess why people read into my posts as negative. They really arent but I guess I understand. Haha! Either way its no big deal, I try to focus on the positive or beneficial posts, not the non constructive negative ones. Lol!
Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2020 It's really easy to find fault in something someone said. It's really easy to see negativity where there isn't any. And it's really easy to escalate negativity even if it's only imagined. Two things that someone smarter than me said. "If you look hard enough to find something, you are going to find it." and "We all have the choice to let something bother us or not" We are all here just talking about feathers, how can any of it be a big deal. I'm talking in general terms here, not pointing any fingers at anybody (who am I?)
